Hi! So this is just a random thing I wanna tell you, I’m not Vegan— but! Listen up, my family has completely given up chicken (due to extreme health risks) and we don’t eat other types of meat, we live in a pretty standard area and eat eggs and milk everyday because they’re healthy, would you consider this progress?
I’m not trying to be rude at all here, but you’ve asked me this question knowing I’m a vegan blogger, so I can only assume you want an honest answer. Any reduction in animal products is obviously a good thing, but “progress” would suggest you’re moving towards veganism, and based on what you’ve told me here this doesn’t sound like the case. It’s a little bit like someone who has stopped abusing their dogs and now only abuses their cats asking if they’re making progress- it’s obviously better to stop abusing some animals, but you don’t exactly feel like giving them a round of applause. I know you probably feel like those two things aren’t comparable but for someone like me who finds the consumption of animal products abhorrent, it really isn’t all that different.
If you’re primarily consuming milk and eggs for health reasons, then you may want to look into that a little more closely. There have been multiple studies linking dairy to everything from cancer and heart disease to osteoporosis. Eggs also have their issues, but even if both of these were associated with no negative effects at all (which very much isn’t the case) then consuming them would still be completely unnecessary. There is nothing in milk and eggs which you can’t get elsewhere, and considering the cruelty involved, if you could give these up without losing any vitamins or nutrients, then why wouldn’t you? I’ve written about the cruelty of milk here and eggs here, please check them out. If you’re looking for a more graphic example, look into videos of chick culling and calf slaughter, both standard industry practices.
As vegans we object to meat, fish, dairy and eggs on ethical grounds, not because we think they’re unhealthy, that is just incidental. Please look into why you should go vegan, and you can see how easy it can be in my guide here. As I said, any reduction is a good thing, but all animal products are the result of exploitation, and when you choose to purchase them, you create demand for that cruelty and death. Dairy and eggs are so easy to avoid, there is just no good reason to continue consuming them when so many healthy, plant based alternatives exist.
