Flexographic Printing vs. Offset Printing: Which Printing Technology is Better?
The printing industry has evolved significantly with the introduction of faster, more efficient, and highly versatile printing technologies. Among the most commonly used industrial printing methods today are flexographic printing and offset printing. Both technologies are widely used across commercial printing, packaging, labels, newspapers, and publishing industries, but they differ greatly in terms of process, speed, substrate compatibility, print quality, and production efficiency.
Businesses searching for high-speed, cost-effective, and future-ready printing solutions often compare flexographic printing and offset printing before investing in machinery.
In this blog, we will explore what flexographic printing and offset printing are, their key differences, cost comparison, advantages, and why flexographic printing is becoming the preferred choice for modern printing industries.

Colour Management in Flexo Printing: How to Achieve Accurate & Consistent Print Results
In flexographic printing, achieving consistent and accurate colour reproduction is one of the biggest challenges faced by printers and packaging manufacturers. The colours seen on a digital screen often differ from the final printed output because screens use the RGB colour model, while flexo printing relies on CMYK inks. This gap makes colour management in flexo printing a critical part of producing high-quality, brand-consistent prints.
Colour management in flexographic printing is a structured process that controls how colours are translated from digital files to printed substrates. It involves calibration, profiling, measurement, and continuous monitoring to ensure that colours remain consistent across different print runs, substrates, and machines. Without proper colour management, printers risk colour variation, reprints, excess waste, and dissatisfied clients.
One of the key elements of flexo colour management is the use of recognised colour standards and profiles. Standards such as ISO 12647 and G7 help maintain tonal balance and grey neutrality, while ICC profiles ensure accurate colour translation between devices like monitors, proofing systems, and printing presses. Spot colour systems such as Pantone (PMS) further help brands maintain colour consistency, especially in packaging and label printing.
Ink density and Tone Value Increase (TVI), commonly known as dot gain, also play a vital role. Excess ink density can darken colours and reduce detail, while insufficient ink can cause washed-out prints. TVI occurs when halftone dots appear larger on the substrate than intended, reducing sharpness. Controlling ink viscosity, plate pressure, anilox selection, and substrate characteristics helps minimise these issues and improve print clarity.
Substrate selection is another major factor in colour accuracy. Paper, films, foils, and other materials absorb and reflect ink differently, which directly impacts the final appearance. Substrate-specific profiling and proofing are essential to ensure colour consistency across various materials. Equally important are lighting and viewing conditions—ISO-compliant lighting such as D50 ensures colours are evaluated accurately during quality checks.
Best practices for flexographic colour reproduction include regular press profiling, routine colour audits, digital proofing, and continuous press calibration using tools like spectrophotometers. Training pressroom teams is equally important, as skilled operators can quickly identify and correct colour deviations, maintaining consistency throughout production.
By implementing effective colour management, flexo printers can significantly reduce print waste, minimise setup time, and deliver vibrant, detailed, and repeatable print results. This not only improves efficiency but also strengthens brand trust and customer satisfaction.
With decades of experience, NBG Printographic has been supporting printers worldwide with advanced flexographic printing machines engineered for precision, stability, and superior colour accuracy. Since 1990, NBG has been a trusted name among printing machinery manufacturers, helping businesses elevate print quality through reliable technology and expert support.
