Packham's Triumph pears were first bred in Australia, a cross between Bon Chretien and Uvedale St. Germain. They are described as good keepers, reliably bearing plentiful large fruit in mid-season. They grow very well in the Southern hemisphere, and were being exported from New Zealand to Britain in the 1930s. This fruit case label may date from the 1940-1960s.

Be warned! This product may contain sugar

Members of the British Medical Association (BMA) are looking to introduce cigarette-style warnings on sugary sweet packaging to reduce the consumption of sugar by children.

The Health Secretary and Food Standards Agency has been urged to introduce warnings on the packaging in a bid to prevent tooth decay. The North West Regional Council said more than 34,000 children aged nine and under had teeth extracted in the last two years. 

Yaël Ossowski, PR Director at Consumer Choice Center, UK, said, ‘Mandating warning labeling would infantilise consumers and ultimately prove ineffective in promoting public health.’
