I think that Díi's monologue about love didn't live up to my plans or drafts but I also am just. So fond of the bits that did make it in.

Creature who IS love incarnate who is love immaterial, irreverent and illogical and immeasurable. Trying to put that into words.

"Love is Flicker building me a tunnel because I said I had to keep killing myself after visiting her" and "love is a week in a hole so you had somewhere you could feel safe" and "love is going to find you" "love is waiting for you to come back" and love is Via coming home and love is Flicker dumping supplies in chests and love is Díi telling Flicker to steal and hoard whatever she needs to feel safe, that Díi will deal with the consequences. Díi's love is overwhelming but it's not pure in the general sense of the word, love is stealing her people's anchors and keeping them alive and it's snooping and smiling and hiding because all she wants is them happy and healthy and they can't be that if they're worried about her. Love is Violet's garden memorial and Love is the warren and Love is Díi answering any questions Violet asks honestly and plainly, even though it's hard and scary.

I think there's even a degree of love in Flicker picking the pod to be the group she plans to sacrifice, and that she realized too late she messed up and genuinely got attached.

"you were supposed to hate me!" / "Then you shouldn't have been so lovable!" And "you don't have to prove your worth to us." / "Not to you! You're too easy to please!"

just. The pod. They're such disasters but they match each other so well in the good ways and the bad.

Flicker -- Amesmp

Take the following information about Flicker, and particularly Díi, with caution, as Flicker is a biased source, and Cessation is an even more biased reader.

Flicker (Enderian) and Seft are very good friends, and went to play together in the Crowned Mountains. During teleport tag, Flicker tried to 'phase' through a wall, and ended up suffocating to death. This upset Cessation greatly, as they previously had not realized other people could not walk through walls, had entirely built their house around phasing, and were being incredibly inhospitable to everyone. Also the fact their GUEST just DIED. Only...Flicker didn't seem to realize that. She evidently only considers death sleeping, or blacking out. Cessation has a...thing about counting how many times people die, since as a phantom they can sense it. And so grew very worried that Flicker wasn't being concerned enough with their life.

Cessation was about to get even more concerned, though. As they discussed Flicker 'waking up in strange places' (respawning), the subject turned to Flicker's amnesia, and tendency to do just that. Frequently. And how she has memories that don't belong to her. And how sometimes she had emotions that didn't belong to her head. Such as viscerally hating Díi with no memory why.

At which point Cessation goes 'oh no.'

Seft brings up the fact she doesn't remember everything her abusive dad did to her, but knows she's wrong for loving him.

At which point Cessation goes 'oh no.'

Flicker reveals Díi has both of her names and sometimes gets 'orders' that compel her to blackout and do whatever Díi says.

At which point Cessation goes 'o h n o.'

As Flicker reiterates that Díi loves her and keeps her safe, Cessation elects to tell the story of how Díi replaced Capri's missing son with a changeling, manipulated Capri's parental love, forced Capri into the deadly hostage house to win back his son, and used Flicker and Cessation to build the hostage house without knowing the evil it was for. Particularly emphasizing manipulation, coercion, and being a tool of Díi.

Flicker didn't like that story. Díi was pod so she couldn't be doing that to Flicker. Seft grows increasingly scared of Díi.

In an aside conversation, Cessation winds up explaining origin lifespans, since Flicker has decided to tell the group that she's an adult (she is not) and Cessation and Seft just went 'sounds right'. A soul is like a fire, Cessation says. Each person only has so long they can burn.

That can't be right. Díi's immortal, Flicker posits.

An immortal soul needs something to burn for fuel. Something they can take that no other origin can.

Cessation then decides, "Let’s form a hypothesis together." They lure the children through logical paths, trying to coax Flicker to the same conclusion that Díi, who has a history of controlling people, is mind-controlling her in some way. But of course, a hypothesis needs evidence.

And as Flicker lays out the evidence, of names and memory gaps recently becoming a person and being told she's not acting like herself and having memories as someone else...Cessation's mind starts whirring more and more about their own situation. Thinking about how they told Seft she wasn't a phantom at all, but a merge of souls. Wondering for the first time what exactly Cess is.

Anyway, Cessation, as a good scientist, recommends writing down what Flicker's experiences with the blackouts are before and after Díi. But uh. Flicker can't read. So Cessation takes the kids to the laboratory archive, where they've set up an impromptu school. The day unwinds into learning about reading and science and each other. Flicker starts keeping a journal of her experiences (in voidspeak) and Cessation convinces her it's not safe to keep herself, since Flicker can be mindcontrolled. So Flicker keeps it with Violet.

Later that night, Seft coaxes Flicker into sleeping in Cessation's nest. Flicker is resistant due to cultural significance, but Seft really wants to return the favor for the time she had a sleepover with Flicker. They all fall asleep together with Cess's wings cast over them. Cessation's last thought before drifting off is that they should build a garden for Flicker, too.

...pay no attention to the iron pipes emerging below the nest, plunging into the ground deep, deep below, straight to the heart of the Ancient City. Also also pay no attention to the glorious statue of Capri with the amazing 6 pack, because obviously this is his house.

A day later Flicker visits the garden Cess made for her. Unfortunately, the roof was not accessible for Flicker, who died trying to teleport to the rafters. Cessation feels awful that Flicker only just got to the garden and they already needed to add another soulfire lantern. Cessation says the garden can be a refuge whenever Flicker needs it, asking what foods Flicker likes to add to a barrel.

"CAKE!!"

At once Cess immediately makes her a cake, though it's remarkably not as good as Díi's. Upon devouring the cake, Flicker declares they are a pod. Cessation has literally no experience with the enderfolk drone units, and Flicker offers no explanation. But apparently they are now in a pod with Flicker, Seft, Via, Violet, and....Díi.
