Finally - flight problems solved

Yes, I finally have my flight information.

My fellow-study abroad student has graciously agreed to give me a place to sleep for a night so we can travel to Japan together. Now my dad has sound mind that I won’t be going halfway across the planet on my own. I’m not exactly friends with this guy but we’ve been in several classes together and we both were on the exec board for Japan Club last year. We’re more like... coworkers? Casual acquaintances? I dunno. He freely admits he’s a weeb and is learning Japanese for fun, but to each their own, I guess.

I go to Chicago O’Hare on August 20th, spend the night, and then with my classmate take a 7:00am flight to San Francisco, arriving at 9:43am San Fran time. Then, a two hour layover, and take an 11:35am flight from San Francisco and arrive in Osaka (Kansai) KIX Airport at 15:00 (3:00pm) Japan Time. Which gets us there before the final 6:00 time.

Coming home, I leave December 20th at 18:20 (6:20pm) from KIX and arrive back in San Francisco at 11:05am. From there, a two hour layover again until I arrive back in O’Hare at 7:32pm. However I get back to Charlotte-Douglass is yet to be seen, as I’ll be taking a different airline back home... but I guess we can worry about that later.

I’m glad everything has worked out. It’s officially official, cost me an arm and a leg but now that I have flight tickets I’m getting super excited just thinking about it.

Now I just have to input the information to the college document and inform Kansai Gaidai when we’ll be arriving so they will pick us up.

Why are flights so complicated?

In order to be picked up by Kansai Gaidai to be taken directly to the university campus for orientation week, I have to be at Kansai Airport, KIX, by 6:00pm Japan time. Reps from the university will regularly be having shuttles to and from the airports from August 21 to August 23, from about 7:00am to 6:00pm, and I need to arrive somewhere between these times one one of those days to avoid confusion with Japanese transportation, which, to a person not familiar with it, can be a little confusing.

Now, this presents immense difficulties and my parents are too stubborn to do it themselves and not get help from a travel agency. All flights that we can find get me to Japan at 6:15pm, which is too late and like hell I’m staying overnight in a foreign airport. Most other options require 30+ hours of traveling, from layovers to actually being in the air. That’s no fun for anyone. Other options require getting up at 3am EST to make it on a flight to Chicago O’Hare, get a 7:00am flight to San Francisco, and then fly out of there to arrive in Japan at 3:00pm. But through two different airline companies, which means I’d have to get my bags, to back up to check in, re-check my bags, and go back through security, blah blah blah. Now I’m not adverse to that if it means I get where I need to be without it taking 30+ hours, but it’s still not ideal.

It’s all very complicated, and me and my parents both want to rip our hair out.

So currently, I’ve asked my fellow classmate who is also going to Kansai Gaidai with me, to stay at his place for a night, and then we take the same flights to San Fran and Japan, so we’re not traveling to the other side of the planet alone. He lives in Forest Park, a suburb to the west of Chicago and practically next to O’Hare.

Nothing is confirmed yet, but as things are looking now, it appears to be that way.

And we haven’t even thought about the return flights yet, so that will be fun.
