Correct! Though I can see where the original localization is coming from. There’s this phenomenon where Japanese people who can’t accept other Japanese people being gay can accept it from Western foreigners, or even the Westernized diaspora. To them, Western influence and homosexuality are correlated. To the more nationalistic types, Western influence is directly to blame for homosexuality—even though historically, the Westernization of Japan was a major factor in the pathologization of (and subsequent legislative and societal discrimination against) homosexuality.

Within that context, I would actually say the previous localization is more in line with Kanda’s dialogue. That being said, it is an oversimplification. Mine is Westernized in ways that go deeper than that, and Kanda has more reasons to hold it against him than that. In that sense it may speak more to original localization team’s biases rather than Kanda’s, or even Yokoyama’s.

I also don’t blame the remaster’s localization team in this case. For one, they didn’t have the original Japanese script to work off of, and were only editing the previous localization. For two, the lead editor is openly queer, and has reason to attribute the biases present to the original localization team. For three, the player isn’t meant to have a chance at suspecting Mine is gay at this point in time. They’re building up a romance with Katase as a red herring, so it’s to the benefit of the narrative to keep this aspect under the radar.

Still, I wish they’d gone with “wannabe Westerner” instead.

what does makoto call mine in y3 japanese/original script that loc translated it as lapdog?

EN Sub Original:

"Mine always seemed so loyal to Daigo."

EN Sub Remastered:

"He's always been like Daigo's loyal lapdog."

EN Lit:

"Mine, [who] was loyal to the sixth chairman to that extent."

I get the appeal and the remaster's not terribly off, but to be a bit of a spoilsport I've always found the term "lapdog" unfitting for Mine. He isn't pampered by Daigo in any way others would recognize as pampering, nor is he under his control, nor is he eager to please in the way the term implies.

It makes sense in a "Date doesn't know Mine or Daigo and that may be how it looks from the outside" kind of way but that's about it. So ironically, while fans often take it to be an accurate description of their dynamic and take Date to be particularly keen-eyed, to me it kind of suggests the opposite.

Because everything a character says about another reveals something about them, the other character, or both, I do think it's important to be discerning about their choice of words, even (perhaps especially) if there's a more tempting option.

So what started this transfem Shishido thoughts may I ask... I don't have many opinions about him in general I'd like to listen...

I completely forgot until you asked so this is embarrassing but 💀

When Infinite Wealth was coming out, we had no idea who Tatara would be, or that Gaiden was written and developed after Infinite Wealth so there was no chance of Shishido showing up either way. My friends and I were joking around like, "What if Shishido tuned in to the catgirl VTuber's stream fuming because exposing Kiryu was his idea first?" which became "What if Shishido was the catgirl VTuber?"

Taking that theory a bit too seriously (as I do best), I began to wonder. What if Shishido was the catgirl VTuber? What would it feel like to put on another mask in the image of a woman, a girl, even? What would it feel like to embody a persona seen as cute, sexy, "moe," adored and defended, idealized beyond what's achievable for anyone in real life, let alone for him? What would it feel like to perform femininity in a bubble on the internet, in a way that can't be traced back to him but therefore can't apply to him?

As it turned out, Chitose was the catgirl VTuber. I was never under the impression it'd be anyone else. (Although Mitamura locked her out of her channel and had someone else run it in the meantime, so who knows?) Still, those questions of alienation and performance and feminine vulnerability stuck with me as trauma responses I recognize both in the trans women I've known and in Shishido.

That's where it started, but where I'm at now is that I honestly think every major aspect of Shishido's character and arc can be examined and explained through a transfem lens with satisfactory results. And you can even do it without him taking up VTubing!
