flog, v.

First attested in the 1670s as a slang word of uncertain origin. The Oxford English Dictionary says that the word is probably imitative in origin, but Century Dictionary claims a possible Low German source which has since been lost. Etymonline.com's own theory is that the word may be a shortening of either Latin flagellare or English flagellate, "to whip or scourge".

I find myself mesmerized by the beauty of poison dart frogs. Their vivid bodies, with their deep hues and beautiful patterns, serve as a warning—apparently to inform enemies that they possess poison. It's similar yet different from the beauty of flowers, but perhaps fundamentally the same. There's something demonic about these creatures radiating color—something you want to touch, yet touching them carries the risk of the poison seeping into you. The mysterious world of living things is boundless.
