Florian Noack | Transcriptions & Paraphrases
Florian Noack is a young Belgian pianist making his mark on the international music scene. His CD, Transcriptions & Paraphrases, recently came out on Ars Produktion. We asked him our three questions!
No-te: what’s your favourite track from this new CD release and why?
Florian: It is hard to say, because there are in this case many parameters which might influence how much I like one track –the original piece itself, the quality of the transcription that I have written, and finally the quality of my playing. For example, I was very happily surprised to hear how well the Women's Dance from Aleko by Rachmaninov sounds on piano. Each time I was playing that piece in concert before, I was always thinking that the transcription wasn’t pianistic, and that it should be changed. This impression changed for the first time when I heard the recording.
If I were to keep only one track from this album, it would probably be Scheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov. Writing the transcription took me two years, but it was particularly rewarding work, and today this is probably the piece that I have played the most in my life. It immediately conveys a story to the listener. I like the richness of the colors, and the simplicity of its themes. This piece speaks directly to everyone, and also to people who are not specially familiar with classical music.
No-te: What’s your favourite classical album right now? Does it have any link to the music you recorded for Transcriptions & Paraphrases?
It's difficult to choose, but I have to mention the live recording of Richter playing the Schubert G Major and B Major Sonatas. It has very little to do with my own recording. I often like to listen to musicians who go in a very different direction than me artistically.
No-te: What are some of your favourite musicians working outside the framework of what we consider “classical music”?
Since my childhood I've admired French singers like Jacques Brel, Georges Brassens and Barbara. In each of them I love a specific aspect of their musical character –with Brassens an amazing virtuosity with the use of the French language, and the distance that he always keeps through his brilliant humor. In Jacques Brel, I love the sincerity, the strength of his emotional investment.
