Florien species description
"Beautiful creatures, thought widely to only exist in myth. They are said to be a mix of man and plant , blooming in spring and sleeping in winter , much like our own houseplants do. They are mystifying , supposedly friendly, but some are said to be as dangerous as some of our own worlds' toxic plants. If the myths are true , I advise you to approach with caution."
-Vasilica Morgenstern, lore keeper of Diance , Meyda .
Basis for species:
(Addendum:Ive had this species since 2015-2016 , ans have been working on them here and there ever since. This is my most recentiteration id them. I had then ib my deviant art a while ago, but had to delete it a long with everything else. So I thought it good to add it here.)I was inspired by the Grecian anthousia (nymphs said to have hyacinth flowers and petals for hair,) and my love of flowers. Floriens can be seen as nymph-like and otherworldly. They share some aspects to the anthousai ,who have flower petal hair and are closely tied to nature; a characteristic of many Floriens. Floriens retain sentience, reasoning , and have human levels of intelligence. Floriens come in male and female, they are widespread in the world of Annue, and come in different forms and flower variants. They are further influenced by the different cultures and countries their colonies reside in. But there are core customs and rules every colony follow.
Other Species Names: Floriens, the floral folk, people of Gaia.
Biology/Physical features:Floriens are a mix of plant and mammal. They heavily resemble either a neiram or a Vausnia(two other sentient races cohabitating on the planet.) with flowers sprouting out of various places of the body. Their plant anatomy coexists within their more animal-like anatomy. Some veins carry blue blood while other veins pump chlorophyll. They still are carbon-based lifeforms and have an inner skeleton as all vertebrates do. However , their foliage tends to grow out of them in various places of the body. This does not seem to cause the Florien andy pain or panic. There are even root like structures that grow out from the hands and feet. In this, floriens are complex organisms that share a mutual relationship themselves , a symbiosis of plant and flesh keeping the other going in one being. With this , Floriens can both consume food and perform photosynthesis, as it both lessens strain and helps spread food storages further. It also helps supplement their diets. Those who are albino or have less chlorophyll must eat more as their bodies are unable to perform photosynthesis correctly.
Other characteristics include; Floriens poses quite a few physical and biological traits that set them apart from Anu's other residents.
sequential hermaphroditism: some real life flowers are hermaphroditic: having fully functional male and female organs simultaneously. It is common with many varieties, such as the lily flower with its stamen and pistil. Other flowers include roses, magnolias , sunflowers , etc. Since floriens are part plant themselves, this trait also carries over in a different fashion. While almost no florien is intersexed or simantanious hermaphrodites , many are sequential. Other examples of sequential hermaphroditism are seen in fish , gastropods, and even other plants. These Floriens can only be one sex at a time, usually reverting to their original sex later on. It is highly situational as the conditions to trigger the change are: uneven sex ratios in a population , same sex pairs for reproduction.the change is never on wim and the individual expresses slight discomfort on occassion. On that note, it is randomized as to which specific florien will exhibit the trait. Just because the flower variant they have is hermaphroditic (as listed) , there is no guarantee that particular individual will change.
Amber:all Floriens produce amber on their bodies. It is the equivalent to a birthmark or mole and varies as much as eye color. Amber is a natural resin produced by trees, and is petrified through time. Floriens have resin naturally in their bodies and it accumulates most where their amber forms.
Petal hair: Flower petal hair is a fairly common trait. This trait occurs with most natural born Floriens. Most of those who were changed to a Florien usually retain their normal hair. their hair changing to petals is a rare occurrence but it happens. The petals, while in the person's associated flower shape, mimic hair shape and formation, it can also grow to various lengths and volumes. There is often a mix of hair and petals as well that is somewhat common too.
Plant roots:As previously stated before, Floriens have resin naturally in their bodies which accumulates in specific places in the body. This is due to the roots and plant veins that run throughout their skin and body, co-existing with their veins and arteries. Despite this, Floriens still retain red blood.
Chlorophyll and natural resin: With the roots lining the body and skin come resin as well as chlorophyll. This is why amber stone can be formed on floriens.
Type and Variant: Every Florien can be Identified by their Type (Race) and Variant(flower species). Most of their culture identifies them through their variant but they will take type in consideration too. Example: if a Florien looks like a Neiram(another species)with daisies flowers growing out of them, then Neiram(or species they look like) is the Type and the daisy flower is the Variant. keep in mind that once a person or creature is changed, their species is now Florien. they only resemble the species they once were, hence why race is the variant.
Decomposition: When a Florien dies, their bodies begin to take root into the ground as they decay. Then flowers bloom from the corpse. Often a small garden grows from one’s body. Many Florien graveyards are elaborate gardens with skeletons and headstones. It is both beautiful and morbid to behold.
Identification: Their sense of smell is highly sensitive. With this ,Floriens often tell what colony and place another Florien has been simply by scent and pheromones. they can do this with other races too, as it tells a lot about the individual. Floriens are creatures of scent and feeling, if they think you are a good person or likable, they will naturally be drawn to your scent. They remember your scent and feel happy around you.
Nectar: They produce nectar , but only the imperial castle's blue nectar is dangerous. All the other caste’s nectar is harmless.
Important relics of their culture/lore.
Lore:
"Floriens are just as old as many of the other races indigenous to the planet. It was also said that they started from a group of settlers of various races who encountered an unfortunate circumstance. Many years ago, there lived a settlement in the middle of a clearing which many deer and wildflowers grew. The people hunted the deer and uprooted the flowers to make their gardens for food, which was well and good. However, the people lived near a nearby forest deity. The settlement had a young mystic who would visit the deity daily, bringing back his messages and warnings. The deity was gentle and somber, only opening to the young girl on occasion. One day she would come back to her home to tell her people to never kill a white deer, for it was the deity's wife. they were also told to never pluck the blue anemone flowers, for they were what she ate and brought back for him. The settlement, now a village complied and for many years they heeded the warning, the white doe would get close to the town and would often walk into the mystic's hut and stay for a period, just for company.
At the same time the forest deity and the mystic's friendship grew and he became less somber. He showed her many tricks, magic, and tales from other eras, including his more violent past and shortcomings. During her trips, the deer would often carry her home.
The day came when a traveling hunter came to the village, the locals were weary but welcoming, and for the most part he kept no trouble and stayed out of the way. He had stayed for a few days to hunt for deer, when he came across a doe with a beautiful white pelt. He watched her for a few hours and noticed she mainly had blue anemone flowers, which were abundant in the area. The next morning, he would gather a bundle of the loveliest blue anemone flowers and place them in a clearing to wait for the doe. He was so eager for the prized pelt. A short while later the doe appeared, gingerly looking over the flowers. The hunter tightened his bow and with precision sent an arrow flying through the doe's neck, killing her instantly.
He went about skinning her and cutting the meat. He returned to the village with the pelt in hand. No sooner did he walk to the village had the entire populace stop and look in terror. He could not understand the gravity of the situation and so the villagers had to explain what was to come. Silent panic spread though the village as the mystic was totally oblivious to the impending doom and what had transpired. The next morning, with the white doe not returning to the deity's home, he rose and made his way to the village. The earth twisted and contorted around him and his red hair swirling wire and obscuring his angry face. Everyone was silent, a few villagers tried to run away but the earth rose to cut off their escape. The mystic had just woken up to the commotion, she had been somewhat ill the previous day and had no idea what was going on. She stumbled out of her hut, still feeling traces of her illness.
Had she been well, she would have warned the hunter to not touch the anemone or harm the deer. Slowly she hobbled to the village center where the Deity stood. Making his stance bigger and his fiery eyes scan the crowd he spoke in a deep, graveled voice, poison dripping from every word.
" You were told not to touch the flower, nor the deer. This was a simple demand that was not met. I care not for whom killed my wife, I already know what transpired. It was your duty to warn them so it would not happen. My patience has worn thin. There will be retribution for this crime and it shall be swift."
As he spoke the earth under the village began to form a sinkhole, and the villagers found the ground around them rising around them. It was as if the earth was engulfing them. The mystic collapsed on the deity's leg, begging him to spare her people and even offered to give him her life instead. The begging, pleading, and screams fell onto deaf ears. The angered deity held up his hand and made the earth swallow the opening of the settlement, thus plunging them into the darkness. Hours later, the deity sat alone. His love was gone, his only friend gone too, and he had no one for company. He was angrier and grief stricken than before. After all this time, he had begun to love the villagers, as hard as he tried not to. and keeping his distance proved pointless. He stood in silence for a little while longer, he could still hear a few hearts faint beating, some semblance of life not yet snuffed out despite the devastation. How resilient they must be. He did not wish to be completely alone, to kill what few friends he had left. The grief grew stronger as he placed his hand on the ground in the center of the hole and waited.
For every life taken away, including the hunter and the white doe, an anemone would grow in their place. For a creature is still alive, no matter how faint, they would rise and live on in a different form. They would never be able to return to their former lives and would forever be tied to the earth. it will be their entire being. The deity retracts his hand, retreating into the forest and slipping into a deep slumber. The mystic was among the first to pull herself out of the earth, roots lined under her skin like veins and buds forming in her hair. A few others followed suit and had the same characteristics. It was as if the earth and plants fused with their flesh, but the surviving villagers soon realized that they were no longer normal and could never be the same again. Many years later to this day in the center of Meyda lies a large crater filled with blue anemone flowers. There is no known population still living there anymore but people still claim to see someone moving around in the area"
Relics:
Floriens are widely dispersed and exist on most continents of planet Anu. Most aspects of their culture vary from colony to colon, varying further with the area/country the Floriens reside in. The colony's culture is a mix of local culture and Florien's core culture that all of them share. Said core culture is tied into their creation; the wrathful Deity, the white deer, and the blue anemone(being of great importance). This is not just in religious belief as it is ingrained into the people themselves as Floriens feel a connection to one another.
A white deer:Seen as a good omen and a sign of positive things to come. A buck stands for good harvest but a doe is the most revered. It is deeply frowned upon as well as illegal to kill a white deer within Florien society. Beyond taboo. Even the most ruthless Floriens approach the deer in caution. Many believe that it is a test from the Deity, so if the deer is left undisturbed they would reap the reward. But if they fail the test, that colony would be swallowed by the earth once more. There would not be a chance of revival afterwards.
The Anemone Flower: Anemone flowers have many different meanings, even within Florien culture. Anemone is greek for "wind's daughter'", buit has little to do with wind in Florien lore.(More can be found here,www.flowermeaning.com/anemone-…).Different colors have different meanings as well. On this planet, anemone flowers grow year-round and are very resistant to cold weather. All varieties are sought after to some degree. While in ancient and pre-modern times many colony leaders entered nasty spats to keep their anemone citizens, often resorting to kidnapping, nowadays commoner Floriens have gained more autonomy which includes rights and choices for anemone citizens as well. However, kidnapping and bribery does still occur from time to time. it wasn't as bad as before though.
Red and pinK: In Floriens, there is a widespread myth that those born with red/pink anemones are going to have a difficult love life. They will either experience their first lover die or die when they find their first lover. Luckily this has been proven untrue, and many red/pink Floriens can experience love without their flowers causing them tragedy. No, life and tragedy can get any Florien and person, at any point in time. They are somewhat celebrated. This variety is the most common.
White: These Floriens have a little more myth to their flowers. Some natives of Annue can see the souls of the dead and speak to them. They are told many vital secrets by the dead and often use it to help others or themselves survive. This ability can occur in nearly any race, including Floriens. Any Florien can possess this ability but most who have it, tend to have flowers associated with death. And many of them are often white anemones. But it is not to say that every white anemone has this ability, for it is a very rare ability over all. This variety of anemone is not quite as common as the red and pink and are fairly revered.
Purple and blue: Purple is somewhat less revered than the blue, but they are valued nonetheless. they are usually the sign that a blue one is coming. The blue ones though are somewhat rarer than the other varieties and usually occur in the civilian caste. Blue is the most revered, and tends to have a special seat or participation in most festivals and celebrations. It is strongly believed that keeping one or more blue anemone Floriens in a colony would ward evil, illness, and bring blessings from their main Deities; one of which would make one appear to the Florien in question. All this makes blue anemones sought after to this very day. It is forbidden to harm or harass one,as is it bad omen to do so. while it is just generally wrong to do that to anyone, to do so towards blues is seen as the colony's death sentence. In one legend, a century ago, a Florien official publicly executed an Blue anemone Florien. It was said that they were innocent but killed anyway. Within hours a great disaster befell the colony with few Floriens escaping the ordeal. The official who orchestrated the execution was found dead in the center of said colony. Occasionally, you will have royalty or a random Florien kill a blue anemone out of spite for the deity. they usually do so in defiance, wanting to prove the legend wrong. But bizarrely, their home or colony would be destroyed through some natural disaster in time afterwards. They are both revered and feared, making said Florien feel awkward and out of place at times. And if there is a blue anemone born by a white deer Florien, or their type is a white deer, they are treated like the spirit's reincarnation. Given doubly special treatment and usually bringing the colony much prosperity. no one is allowed to touch them or be near them without special permission. While all blue anemones are permitted to lead their own lives, they usually have to live in the castle with the colony's leader, or at least close by. They sometimes have their own attendants and staff that tend. They are in a way, permanent guests.
Nightshade plant: Nightshade is deadly for many to consume but a florien may eat any part of it with no issue. This plant is very polarizing as eating it can cause non-floriens harm. nightshade has a lot of medicinal properties that are used to this day. it relates to life as either making you stronger , sparing you from its harshness , or killing you outright. It can play into how life is in itself , a gamble and not always good or bad.. But there are medicinal benefits if one here to know how to properly utilize nightshade. Nightshade is said to grow from the back of the life deity , Vidal. She is in charge of life and shares rebirth. Nightshade floriens are highly revered but more to the degree that purple anemones are and not to the degree blue anemones. Still , they are admired and seen as a good omen , of not one to make the colony stay on its toes.
Main deities of worship:Many floriens worship several deities, such as Myn and Levia. But most of not all revere and worship three main deities to some degree.
The Sleeping deity: Very few have seen him but all Floriens fear and respect him. He is the god of change and adaptation. He and his wife are said to move from the land of deities to live amongst the mortals from time to time. His sleeping location is known by few but has been passed down orally for centuries. It was said that he is awake during the spring and summer and sleeps during winter, when he is at his most volatile. It is also mentioned that the fall of the village he destroyed took place during winter. So, no celebrations are held during winter for fear of waking him and earning his anger once more. Although there is a Three-day festival held before the winter solstice and a festival held a week after the spring solstice. The former to hope for a good sleep and to not wake him. The second is to celebrate him being awake and to not worry about waking him anymore. Both celebrations take place at night and can complement death and life with winter and spring respectively.
The White deer deity: Otherwise known as Muerta the pale, wife to the sleeping deity. She is the deity of death and rebirth and considered one of the creation gods to the floriens, the sleeping deity being the other half. She and her husband are said to have moved from the land of deities to live among mortals from time to time. She is awake in deer form most of the year as her husband sleeps. She sometimes appears in her normal form. Through her forgiveness and rebirthing the first people held while her husband changed them and made them adapt from their punishment. She is said to cherish the souls of the dead and help them pass from the afterlife and into their rebirth. Meurta has all the stones of each caste on her abdomen and anemone flowers are said to grow on her hair and body. She is celebrated in both fall and winter.
Behavior: While all of them are highly individualistic with personalities as unique as them, Floriens are still highly social and community oriented species. They are deeply dependent on social interaction and community as they build up their society and long afterwards. While individuals are independent and can take care of themselves, they cannot be without the company of other Floriens for long periods of time. That is how they are wired and how they survive. They tend to work together and will even assist one another in child rearing if needed be. While each can specialize in a few skills , they can often combine their efforts for something greater. Many , especially in the civilian and guardian castes , are exceptionally friendly to newcomers they deem trustworthy. They have a way of reading individuals; even those of other species. For those non-floriens deemed untrustworthy or still being evaluated , they will hide away, camouflaged by their surroundings , or will appear without their floral parts to steer the newcomer away.If worse comes to worse , they will drive the newcomer off. As for untrustworthy or dangerous floriens , they will outright confront them as is or will drive them off as well.
They are willing to work with other species of people , but normally do so under illusion.where they appear without their plant parts and are seen as normal. Sometimes they will show a few of their floral characteristics but this is for a wide number of reasons. Either honesty and trust or for explanation. This is part of why so many people view floriens as a sort of myth , and those few that were found or recorded were thought to have some sort of misunderstood condition, a disease , or were simply cursed. It is through this and several mass paranoia and hysteria on both the other species parts and the floriens that most choose to hide in plain sight.
Social Structure/Caste system:Floriens are similar to honey bees. Or more so ants in that they have biologically determined hierarchy that affect both an individual social status as well as its physical characteristics.
Ants, as example, go by this structure;worker, soldier, and the queen.
In florien society , they have four castes that come in both male and female. All castes are fertile and can reproduce with one another regardless of caste. However, like ants , an individual’s caste is determined when they are born; it has nothing to do with title , money, or their parent’s own social status. No, if one’s biological build and amber are shaped a certain way , their place is set in stone. They never move up through the ranks regardless of marriage or how much money they earn. Say If a Queen Florien marries a Civilian , the spouse will remain a Civilian and will not gain the title of “King”, and vice versa. The florien Caste system goes like this: Civilian , guardian , Monarch , and Imperial.

Health risks and illnesses:
There are not many things Floriens can be affected by, but they are susceptible to fungal infections and diseases. Which can be fatal if not treated. They often exhibit flu-like symptoms as signs. In some cases , Mushrooms will sprout , draining them further. Though this is treatby in most cases.
If an individual is left alone for too long, they develop anxiety and severe depression. The emotional health of the Florien is tied deeply to their physical health as well, making prolonged depression fatal. A broken heart can kill too. But it is eventually alleviated if they are able to socialize for a time. This is prominent in the lower two classes as they are the most social and community driven. This is another reason why the leaders of the colony are always trying to keep their followers content and in decent numbers. The health of the colony depends on it.
Courting and Reproduction:
Dating and reproduction is not caste oriented among floriens ( Like an emperor can be paired with a commoner can hook up no social issues ensue.). It must also be noted that class birth is randomized. And every baby is an adorable gamble. (one is born AS their respective caste not born into it. Example: Two commoners can have a queen or an Empress can have a guardian.)Floriens will date different people until they find someone they deem most compatible.
Most break ups are treated well and usually left on a good note because they see dating as a trial period. Once they deem one another worthy they form lifelong mating bonds between the pair. Although separation and divorce is rare it does occur and each person leaves promptly with the things they brought , to pursue other people. feelings are not bitter for long. (like two days after the divorce they are cool with one another.) If it doesn't work, then it doesn't work.
Floriens are capable of interbreeding with other species. Most notably the Vausnia and the Neriam , though there is a possibility they can reproduce with the Nocturnes as well. They share enough DNA to the other species that they can produce fertile, healthy offspring. Only issues are the initial shock of potentially seeing their different body parts, and the fact that 60% of all interracial couplings yield pure Florien offspring. And if an Emperor or an Empress reproduces with a non-Florien, that non-florien will turn into a Florien in time. There is even the rare occurence of a pair of floriens producing non-florien young. But this is usually an indication that someone down the bloodline was either a non-florien or a transformed florien. Overall, Floriens tend to be very affectionate and attentive to their children and mates almost to the point of being clingy, but they all show it in different ways.
Birth and early life:
It starts from a normal mammalian courtship then pregnancy , but the pregnant florien on the fourth month peels back her stomach and removes an enlarged seedpod. The mother recovers from the process for a day or two, then she is strong enough to go about as normal. In this time, The male both tends to the female as well as buries the pod. As time goes by the pair tend to the offspring’s garden as a nursery.
Floriens form in pods regardless of interspecies parentage. If the mother is non-Florien, the pod will be smaller and softer to accommodate the mother’s anatomy. It only hardens when outside the mother’s body and takes longer to develop. Seed pods resemble just that, large seed pods that hold the developing Florien inside. The bulbs tend to be the size of an average two-week-old baby. Noises and movement can come from the bulb, indicating life. The seed pod will remain buried for four or five months, after which they sprout. Then a few weeks later they blossom into a large flower. in the center of the blossom is a well-developed offspring that resembles a seven-month-old baby. It closes shut when the seedling is sleeping and opens when it is awake. They cannot be removed as their birth cords are still attached to the flower , and through said flower is where they get their nutrients. They remain this way between one to two years, after which the flower will wilt. Then and only then is it safe to remove the offspring and take them indoors.
Florien children are called seedlings or buds, even through their teenage years. Floriens have a tendency to refer to any and all offspring as “seedlings” or “Buds” as well. The seedlings do resemble the parents in body and physical characteristics, although there is no guarantee that they will have the same flower as their parents. That is randomized as well as their caste. The parents continue to raise the seedling until the age of nineteen where they can live on their own. Though most remain close by and even assist with the rearing of younger siblings.
Inter-species relations:Floriens are not widely known. While most interact peacefully with other species of people , they do so under their illusions, hiding in plain sight. They are rarely publicized and are widely believed to either by mythical creatures of the forest or cursed mortals , or individuals with a strange condition. There are some individuals with the gift of “seeing truth” that can see through illusions such as theirs , but most of them peacefully coexist with them. There are even some Floriens who reveal themselves to a special few for one reason or another, whether it be a close friend , spouse , or a dangerous individual they plan to lure, it is rarely an accident. There is a bit of a mixed history between floriens and the Vausnia and Neiram , with fear and mass hysteria getting the better of one side from time to time. It is usually in small instances or city wide ,there have been times when non-florien towns have their inhabitants either disappear or be turned almost overnight. There are instances of neiram and Vausnia discovering florien in their midst and they have either chased them off or killed them ,exploited them , or worshiped them. This coupled with the selective few who know of the Floriens other nature of turning others into more of themselves all result in superstition, fear or ignorance. The Nocturn simply see them as people that smell like flowers, even after their true nature is discovered. and very rarely enter altercations with them. While many florien are unsure and even fearful of the Nocturn. Still , relations between close living Nocturn clans and florien colonies have yielded excellent relations most times and horrible enemies on occasion. While spotty , most species are on largely good terms. There will always be fearful or suspicious individuals in any individual regardless of species. But in most cases both sides have viewed the other as just another group of odd people and they go about their merry way.
Abilities:
Floriens have a few abilities that are characteristics of the species. Here is a list of them. Though these are common and necessary abilities , they vary in skill and potency. Not only that but Floriens can have different and unique specialties between one another and have an extra ability all their own. Other than that , all floriens can use these base abilities to some degree.
Regeneration: All florien are able to regenerate in varying degrees. The higher the cast , the faster and more efficient the regeneration.Civilian floriens heal the slowest, therein they regenerate the slowest as well. They can regenerate partial limbs in a span of a few weeks if not burned. Same with the Guardians tho they can heal and regrow some minor organs. A monarch can take a few days to recover a limb and most organs, so long as the heart is mostly intact. In some cases they can reattach their heads but not regrow them. An imperial Florien is a force of nature and can regenerate minor cuts and bruises almost instantaneously. Imperials can grow their heads back as well as repair major organs over time if not regrow them. A lopped off limb? Ripped out rib bone? It hurts a lot but all they need is some sun , water, and a resting place. After that they are right as rain. However, they are susceptible to blood loss , burning , and sustained damage to the heart. As all florians are ,So while difficult , they can still die from their injuries.
Illusion: Floriens all possess the ability to appear "normal", as in they have limited control over illusions that they cast over themselves so that their plant parts are disguised. This ability is used so that they do not raise suspicion, can be used indefinitely, and they can live among a population for years undetected. They will look largely the same minus the floral parts, the illusions do not alter their form very much. The only way to tell if one is a Florien (while in their illusion) is if they smell like their associated flowers. Which honestly isn't a very reliable method.
Plant manipulation: All Floriens have subtle influence over all vegetation, and wherever they tend to go the local area flourishes with plant life. They make excellent farmers and are barely aware if it as most can not control it nor can they influence very much besides growth and health. The only Floriens that has full control or even agrokinesisis the Emperor/Empress. They often use this as an offensive and defensive ability, but more often than not they use it to build their colonies and can make gorgeous architecture as a result.
Environmental fusion: All Floriens can "fuse" or "melt" into their natural environment. They often use this ability to hide from attackers/predators or to ambush their enemies. They normally do not get this ability until they turn twelve years or so.
Burrowing: More commonly used among the Civilian caste, floriens can burrow rapidly into most terrain. It gives people the impression that they pop up from the ground as is , when really, a random florien just didn’t feel like walking in the heat and decided to take a quick dirt nap. This is especially prevalent in the summer heat or winter chill.
Photosynthesis: All Floriens can perform photosynthesis and do not have to eat as much as most other races do. It helps spread out food for others and lowers competition for resources. However, photosynthesis is necessary but Floriens still need to eat as it is only part of their diet. They are omnivorous, so they require protection and meat as well. All the Florien has to do is stand in the sun for a little while, the process is subconscious. That is also why most colonies are in sunny areas with slight shade.
