Fun with Bot
As with everything else, apps and algorisms have infiltrated the world of flower photography. If I’m stuck for a species, I often ask a flowerbot for advice. If you type terms like “identify plants for free” into a search engine, it will connect you to AI in action. Just for fun, I’ve been putting artificial flowers into these bots to see if they can spot the difference.
I must admit, I’m Impressed. When a flowerbot doesn’t ‘know’ what a particular flower is, it usually reply's “we think it might be a....” and give me four possible choices, Flowerbots certainly ‘know’ the difference between a rose and a daffodil. However, when I put artificial flowers into my favorite flowerbot, it usually gives me a “we think it might be a...” response”. So far, it’s only made one mistake by ‘positively identifying’ a plastic crocus.
Bots are continuing to take more control of our lives - from GPS to dating apps to our political opinions. Maybe it’s time to ask “Where does this all end?” In the world of facial recognition technology, flowerbots are probably a second year project for computer science students. But be forewarned, a Brave New World is just around the corner, and then the Age of the Flowerbots will begin.
Incidentally, spellcheck redlines my term ‘flowerbot’. Apparently, I’ve just invented a new word.
