There were humans in the palace. Nyadina felt the vertebrae petals that ran down her back unfurl and curve up towards the sun and hastily flattened them down. It wouldn’t do to flaunt her excitement like a sapling that hadn’t seen its first winter.
Nyadina hadn’t got to meet humans last time they came, she had been barely more than a sprout, but everyone knew that this was time was the important one. This time the humans were here to discuss a trade deal with the Florauna! Nyadina had never seen her siblings so exited, or their parent so busy. They had even arrived just in time for the sporing! And everyone knew that that was the most beautiful festival in the seven galaxies. Nyadina crept closer and peered round the door to the humans’ room.
There were three in there. Two dressed in the dark blue that humans assigned to ‘male’ and one in red. The red ‘female’ was arguing with one of the males while the other laughed.
“Take it off.” The Woman snapped, “You’re being I’m not wearing mine and i’m perfectly fine. You’re going to insult -”
“Ahem.” The unhelmeted male said pointedly, nodding in Nyadina’s direction. Nyadina squeaked and jumped back behind the corner. Before peeking round again.
“I’m very sorry we bothered you.” the female said, “I’m Amber, and these two morons are Sarah,” - she pointed to one male - “and Dan.” She glared at the helmeted one who folded his arms and presumably glared back from behind the tinted glass.
Nyadina wondered if the Amber was the human blooms centerpiece as her parent was the Forauna’s but it seemed rude to ask. She fluttered her hands nervously. “The air is safe.” She assured them. “There is no danger in removing the helmet.”
“Hah.” Dan laughed, “Not bloody likely, I’m staying in here where it’s safe.”
“Oh shut it.” Sarah snapped, waking Dan on the arm. “Ignore him. He’s just bitter cause my immune system is superior.”
Immune system? Had the human been injured?
“Ignore both of them.” Said Amber, “They’re just-” She broke off with a truly awful noise, bending fowards as her body convulsed and the noise came again.
Nyadina’s crown petals flared out in alarm. What was wrong with the human? Had someone poisoned them? But who would be so twisted as to poison someone during the sporing?
“I am so sorry about that.” Amber said, glancing up at Nyadina, “Hay-fever.”
