Severus didn't say it, but she knew he overheard the prophecy and reported it.

She only just managed to deflect from such a conclusion and made him believe she was worrying over Xenophillius and his wife. It was a good thing they were close friends who did not get to see each other very often or else he might have seen through her.

She had to warn Dumbledore or the Longbottoms - even she knew they were expecting a child, these sorts of rumors were worth gold in Pureblood circles - Severus was not going to become a spy this time, he wasn't close to either Alice or Frank.

Lily had to, she couldn't just do nothing when Alice's life was in danger.

Quickly coming up with a plan she summoned her personal house-elf. "Boppy." she whispered in the silence of the room. The elf showed up immediately, he wouldn't be obliged to report to her husband should he even be asked by Augustus.

"Yes mistress?"

"I will ask you to write two letters and deliver them for me, do not be seen under any circumstances or reveal who you serve, be that me by name or the House of Rookwood, do you understand?" Lily asked kindly, she might be asking much of Boppy, but house-elves were severely underestimated and it paid to treat them kindly and have respect for their strengths, one of which was being unseen.

"Boppy understands." he smiled and wrote down her dictation.

"Leave one in Albus Dumbledore's office as soon as you can and the other in a private room of Alice Longbottom then return here when I'm alone," she remembered Regulus and the way he ordered Kreatcher to return, so she made sure to always do so.

"I will remove your memory of these orders so that people cannot steal them from you."

"Boppy will do as told Mistress." Boppy smiled happily, Lily was his favorite Mistress, which took her a while to notice, but portraits often exchanged glances over things they considered plebeian.

"Thank you Boppy." she smiled.

With that the elf vanished.

At dinner time, while Albus Dumbledore was eating in the great hall contemplating on Sybil Trawlaney, a house-elf left a scrap of parchment on his desk, not being seen by any be it portraits or the dozing phoenix.

House-elves were Hogwarts caretakers and Boppy had been in before for any urgent news to Augustus Rookwood so not even the wards reacted to his presence.

The parchment contained only two brief sentences.

'He knows about the prophecy. Hide them.'

Albus Dumbledore never felt older then he did when he read it.

It was Alice however whose jaw firmed in determination at the letter she received. 'A prophecy has been made that may have the Dark Lord target you and your family, take caution.'

"Who is the Head Boy?" he glanced at the badge in her hand. There was no way that she was angry she was Head Girl so it must be the other person.

Barty had a good idea who it could be, there were only few that could make her react like this.

"Potter." she hissed.

"Oh." He was right.
