Description

This scene from the biblical book of Genesis shows the angel appearing to Hagar, an enslaved woman in Egypt. Banished with her infant Ishmael to the desert by her new husband, Abraham, Hagar was allegedly saved by a heavenly creature who directed her to a spring of water.

Description

The amorous encounter between Mars and the Vestal Virgin Rhea Silvia led to the birth of the twins Romulus and Remus, and therefore ultimately to the foundation of the city of Rome. In this canvas, Mars is shown stepping down from a cloud which has transported him into the presence of the Vestal Virgin, identified as such by the statue of Athene with blazing coals at its feet. He is accompanied by a cherub who is holding his spectacular helmet, and by the pimping figure of Cupid himself with a quiver full of arrows.
