Genuine question to any undertale fans who call Papyrus naive, what do you mean by this? English is my second language, and I have been using it for most of my life, but sometimes nuance still escapes me, and the word 'naive' specifically is so.. weird.
Papyrus extends a hand because he knows- likely from personal experience- that doing better is a matter of choice and effort. He is not wrong for this, the game's core message is on his side in this. So this can't be what naive means, unless I misunderstand the word itself. I strongly feel that it would take away from the message if he was only willing to believe in improvement of others because he 'doesn't know better' because that implies that if he knew more, he should have different core values. Ones that would make him not extend that hand.
Or does the "naive" thing mean more like a... idk. difficulty fitting in? Or a social unawareness? Behaviours that are strange?
The word's definition says it is a lack of experience, but I don't understand how that applies to Papyrus and only him. So, I guess he could be inexperienced, but it wouldn't be a lack of experience that's unique to him. All monsters are "naive" to some extent, due to not having seen the outside world. I think it's less a Papyrus thing and more a "being trapped underground for ages" thing.
