the biggest issue I've identified (so far) in my improv practice is that I keep trying to explode into long-winded David Gilmour solos and I rarely commit to any of the build up that would supply contrast and make it sound worth a damn. basically, I lack composure. in the heat of the moment, it all gets to me and before I know it there's 30 seconds of the exercise left and no time to recover any shred of dynamics the take is sorely lacking
so this week i'm gonna exercise restraint, pace my phrasing and reserve the Gilmour bursts into controlled little interludes that make the rest of my new found composure sound especially good. (also I picked up a blues riff book written specifically for flute, so that should help stimulate the creative juices)
next objective is to improve at singing while I play. i currently sound awful when I try it (because I'd never tried it before this week) but I've been aggressively studying my Roland Kirk CDs and surely he'll guide me true
