sounds like we've both seen some ugly things. @flxmekeepr, juliette nichols.

secrets of his influence are woven into lavish suit, threads of starlight as though he had them brought them down himself. and he could if he wanted to. (he was the marquis de gramont, and the spurning of whom served only a death sentence.) but the fulfilment of this title had not been an uncomplicated feat: it was brutal and barbarous and bloody, his unstinted malice embedded in the red suit jacket that adorned his shoulders. a striking shade that symbolised little besides danger, violence. blood. even the simple entering of a room, vincent brought with him the turn of heads. these ugly things had paved the way for beauty, a necessary evil to attain what he believed was deserved: and vincent thinks he has paid for it, a thousand times over. so what if he indulged himself in that materialistic reverie? what else was there to do in nobility?

it's something that henry had to accept long ago.  no matter how badly he wished to be 'good,'  that wasn't possible in the world they live in,  not with the way people can so easily wager with the lives of others .  henry had the choice of being the good guy or being the guy who protects his brother through everything ---  and if being the bad guy is the sacrifice he has to make to maintain his promise to his brother and his late mother's honor,  then there couldn't be any hesitation   (  even if it came at the cost of someone else's life,  too  ---   someone he loved almost as much as sam.  )

his own life is hardly a factor;  he only wishes to do the best he can,  to be the respectable man that his mother might have been proud of and one that sam can follow in the footsteps of,  but he's no stranger to making the hard choices or in being the one to wager with lives himself.   the question is simple:  ' i want to be alive, don't you? '   but henry's never really had a simple answer for it himself;   he and his brother are alive,  but his decisions live in him.  they weigh him down, choke him ---  but he still can't live with any regrets.
