Back to the ones requested by friends. Murkrow was requested by a friend who is a zookeeper that works with birds! (Talk about pressure to sell the ‘birdy’ movements!)

Crows and ravens actually have fairly long legs for passerine birds. Murkrow does not, unfortunately.

Experimented with adding noise to various parts of the flight animation to hopefully make it feel like there’s wind. I’m no Simon Otto though.

Model extracted from ripped files by me, rigged with Advanced Skeleton by me, and animated by, you guessed it, me.

For some reason, half of the eye texture was eaten by what I assume is issues with the alpha channels or something? I tried for hours to see if I could extract the complete texture from the files, but no luck. I ended up re-drawing the rest of the eye texture and I’ve never done something like that before; texturing is the pipeline aspect I’m worst at. Fortunately I had a normals map with the eye shapes to help me figure out what went where.

I feel like this rig is a little more fragile than most of the other ones. The spine IK is iffy and Maya is constantly telling me that there’s some fishy calculations happening when I move parts of this rig. The control hierarchy came out weird and I had to manually add in some constraints. IDK if that’s Advanced Skeleton struggling with the limited joints in these, just a quirk of the bird rig set-up, or both.

My friend also requested Honchkrow, and I might yet do that one, but I started with Murkrow because it has a more flexible body for animation and nicer wings. I suspect Honchkrow’s wing joints are going to be a hot mess.

I know Yveltal doesn’t knuckle-walk but IMO it should? It would be so cool?

The next pokemon rigs I made using those models I found that still had their original joints and skin weights; except the Crobat, that one I had to export from ripped files myself. I had to do Crobat because it’s one of my sister’s favorites and I wanted to try animating 4 wings. Turns out 4 wings are tricky.  I probably should have looked at official in-game animations and references for all of these, but I was lazy and just winged it~  ٩( ᐛ )و

The Crobat rig was easy, it’s basically a potato with straight forward FK wings, there’s really nothing fancy happening there.

The Yveltal... well let’s just say that legendary pokemon are hard to catch, and this one was hard to rig too, heck! I spent like 3 days just fighting and arguing with Advanced Skeleton. I made the rig and started over at least 3 times; one time one wing just broke and the back toes were attached somewhere really strange, and one other time Maya would crash completely if I tried to rotate the spine controls sideways. One file got corrupted somewhere and the auto-rigger wouldn’t finish the build at all, and at one point I had to re-set my Maya preferences because it glitched out completely and would crash if I tried to open any existing file; overall it felt like Yveltal was mildly cursed. The final rig isn’t perfect, there’s issues here and there, but at this point I’m relieved that 95% of it works more-or-less how I want it to work.
