Maybe she was pushing it a little, smiling like this, but it was a nice day. The sun was bright and shining, and, other than the construction going around, it was almost the same as before. Sure, it might not be like this forever, and--- and she wanted to enjoy the days with her friends before she would have to head back.
That’s why she’d asked Sora out for once; she couldn’t just wait for them to do something anymore. She ... didn’t want them to worry again. She wanted to pay back their kindness, one by one.
“ Sora-san! ” Meiko waved, spotting the familiar chosen child.
Kouichi stood staring through the frosted windows of the Inoue I-Mart at the on-display bakery goods that were covered in a shadowy, dismal darkness due to the fact that the shop was, unfortunately, very closed at the moment.
The warrior berated himself for not having known what time or day it was, pressing his forehead against the glass with a suddenly hungry growl issuing from his stomach. And it’s not like he could just directly contact Miyako seeing as how they weren’t on the best of terms... they were more like ‘occasionally annoying acquaintances’ rather than ‘friends from the digital world.’
Kouichi glowered at the sign that boasted of love and sincerity in its marketing as if in accusation and stepped away before realizing he wasn’t the only person around the Inoue shop waiting for it to open - and he almost ran right into them.
YOU COULD’VE SAID PURGATRI AND YOU DIDN’T. also it’s terrible, daisuke won’t stop singing that one fucking song from Shrek and nothing grows in this barren soil. what do vegetables look like? I’ve forgotten. I miss coffee so much. Save me us.
Our muses running into each other at an awkward time/place
(please note: I don’t actually know what Japanese drugstores are like. for the purposes of this, I’m assuming a Western layout with everything in the aisles. also this is very much rated T for Teen.)
March, 2004
So they’d both agreed to it, in-between all the graduation parties. He’d suggested it, but she’d found herself nodding.
“Let’s start high school without all the expectations.” Without everyone knowing that they’d dated, without people who’d never met them seeing them as ‘Sora’s boyfriend/Yamato’s girlfriend’. “Let’s just be friends again and see what happens.”
At this particular moment, Sora was torn between wanting to sink into the floor and wanting to kill him.
Bad enough to run into someone you knew with things for your period in hand. Worse to barely believe what he had.
Yamato winced. “Hi, Sora.” Lubricant in one hand, a box of condoms in the other – which he seemed to be closely studying – and Sora felt the color drain from her face – a pregnancy kit in his basket.
She covered her mouth, not quite sure what would come out. They’d cuddled. They’d kissed. She still blushed when she saw him without a shirt. What. was. going. on??
Yamato tossed the stuff in his basket and tried to grab her shoulders. “Sora, it’s not like that–”
She swiped him away. “Who is she? Is she going to Tsukishima, too?”
“It’s– not– like– that,” he said, slowly, heavily. “Look, it’s my mom, okay–?”
Suddenly the world felt less broken, but equally confused. “Ms. Natsuko’s having a baby…?” she said, tentatively.
Now his face looked shocked and panicked. “No…! It’s Takeru.”
Sora couldn’t even come up with anything for that, so she just blinked and stared, willing him to explain.
“He got a little too flirty with girls last year. My mom wants me to educate-and-scare the crap out of him before he starts junior high so he doesn’t do anything stupid.”
Oh.
“I figured a pregnancy test was the best way to do that, you know?”
“Certainly worked on me.” Sora found her voice again.
He scowled. “Why do you always think the worst of me?”
Because any girl would get pregnant by you, idiot. And because it was that week of the month when she could never seem to control her temper. She touched his shoulder, lightly, in apology. “Sorry. I didn’t know what to think. And…” She wasn’t sure what to say. Too many feelings.
“I forgive you.” His expression softened. “I wouldn’t have been able to figure this out, either.” How was it that they’d dated for more than a year, and she was still a mystery to him, and likewise?
He was still cute when he was blushing. He was still cute, period, but Sora knew you shouldn’t hurt your friends. You could tease them, though.
“I’ll let you get back to your, um… ‘lesson planning’. You seem like you’re really working hard at it. Bye, Yamato.”
“Yeah, let’s see each other somewhere that’s… not this. Later.”
“Let me know how it goes.” She chuckled. “I’ll see you at school.”

She won’t be able to go on for much longer if she doesn’t relax. Maybe I should get her a gift?”
