It blows my mind how amazing yet underrated May Chang is. I feel like some people looked at her character design and listened to her gushing about her idealized version of Edward Elric and just dismissed her as a cutesy and slightly annoying child with some skills when in reality she is easily one of the most badass FMA girls.
She is trained in martial arts and Alkahestry, shouldered her clan's fate and crossed the desert together with her pet panda to a foreign country to find the source of immortality.
Although her crush on Ed and later Al is treated as comic relief most of the time, she seems to be someone who loves with all of her heart. But despite her feelings for Al she does what has to be done during the Promised Day and helps Al retrieve Ed's arm from the gate of truth in exchange for Al's soul.
May isn't one to give up easily, even after finding out the truth about the Philosopher's Stone. She even takes on Father, despite being terrified of him at first.
In a group of adults (with the exception of Winry and Al) young May is the one to realize that they have to take apart and rearrange the research left by Scars brother in order to find its true meaning.
When they send May on her way to bring Envy back with her to Xing, she turns back when she reaches Youswell. Although it was Envy who talked her into heading back to Central, she wouldn't have given in, had she not been as compassionate and caring as she is.
And when the one thing she desires most, the thing she traveled all the way from Xing to Amestris for, is right in front of her, she ignores it to save a strangers life instead.
May Chang is far more than "an annoying little kid". She is an amazing character whose strength lies not just in her Alkahestry and martial arts skills but also in her heart.
