A man showed up at the shop today. I mean, there's nothing really abnormal about that - I don't suppose you get many blokes coming into a consignment shop, but it's not too far out of the ordinary - and yet, I can't stop thinking about it.
He tried to sell me this... pocket watch. An old thing, sort of brassy-looking, with circles all over it. He said it was old and quite valuable, but it brought back bad memories. Said he wanted rid of the thing. I asked if it was haunted, and he sort of laughed it off, but I think he was just trying to convince me to take it. Anyway, I told him he'd be better off trying the pawn shop down the street. But he was in a rush, and he ended up leaving without me even paying him.
Just left it there on the counter.
So, I took it.
I don't know what I was thinking, I could be sacked for this if anyone finds out. But it just seemed... I dunno, too valuable to let it get sold off. It sounds mad, but I almost felt as if it spoke to me. Like I could feel the memories, the history inside it. But I couldn't get it open.
I know I should probably get rid of it, or take it back to the shop, but I just can't bring myself to. I'm going to keep it, I think. And maybe, if I see that man again, I can give it back to him. Because memories like that are too important to just... give away to a stranger.
