Choosing the right lens for the situation
We all have some favourite lenses we use for certain photographic topics. Are you feeling limited by your current lens choices in street photography? It can be frustrating to miss out on capturing the perfect shot because your lens doesn’t quite fit the scene. Choosing the right lens for the situation Choosing the right lens can make a big difference depending on your shooting style. It also can…
Where’s your head at? - Different focal length
The smaller number of focal length the wider angle it is. I took some pictures with different focal length to show a difference.
14mm
25mm
42mm
70mm
100mm
150mm
the higher number the more blurred the background is, and mug looks less “flat”.
The best focal length for portraits is about 70-85mm.
My camera settings were F/5.6, 1/30 sec, ISO 100 for all images.
Task - Where is your head at?
We were given the task to shoot at different focal lengths whilest trying to keep our subjects head the same size in the frame.
Shot at home in our spareroom using window lighting.
I had to move my own position to try and keep the frame the same and head size with the focal adjustments. I found this quite tricky.

Focal Lengths
How is it calculated?
Measured in millimetres, it is calculated by the distance of the light rays that come together to create a focal point and then an image.
What do the values/numbers represent?
These represent the field of view within the lens and how much a scene will be magnified. The lower the number, the wider the view, the smaller the number, the narrower the view.
What impact do they have on your shots?
While determining how our images will be affected by the lens, subjects within a scene will either be larger or smaller than our eye can see in accordance with the size of lens in use. If using a telephoto lens things will appear bigger whereas a more wide angle lens will make things smaller. So if the incorrect lens is chosen this can result in an element of distortion or a flattened perspective.
Focal Length
Q1) How are focal lengths calculated?
Focal lengths are calculated by the distance from the point where the light rays form a sharp image.
Q2) What do focal length values represent?
Focal length values represent how much of the scene will be captured (how much of the scene will be in the frame).
Q3) What impact do they have on your shots?
It impacts these shots by capturing a specific amount of space in the frame. a shot taken with an 18mm lens will capture a wide angle view, whereas a 55mm lens will capture a narrow angel view.
