I was thinking about planned obsolescence because I'm getting into large format photography. For those wondering what that is, it's those cameras you think of as old timey (probably) with a huge bellows and the little curtain the photographer drapes over themselves to shoot. I've wanted to do this since I was a kid learning black and white film photography and I finally have the time and money to get into it.

So what does this have to do with planned obsolescence? Well, most of this stuff isn't made anymore because, from a commercial aspect, digital is easier and way more convenient. This means pretty much any equipment you're going to buy is used. Some of the lens and camera bodies I've seen for sale are older than I am (and I turn fifty in a couple of months). You know what though? They still work and work well. This stuff was being turned out when Boomers were teenagers and you can still put it together and turn out images with it.

In comparison, I have a digital Nikon SLR that I bought about twenty years ago that I'm not even sure I could get to talk to my current computer. I had an old point and shoot digital that was a bit older that I KNOW I couldn't get to work now because none of the drivers to interface with it work with a modern system. I'm not even sure if they intended this (at least at first). I think it's a side effect of digitization of our lives. If you can't physically hold the final product, it's at the whims of software.

Where am I going with this? Nowhere in particular. I'm not really ranting for a return to the old ways, I'd probably even buy a large format digital if I could (they are not cheap), but there's just something about equipment that is so solid, so basic, that you can keep using it long after it was ever made.
