She was such a damn idiot.
There were a lot of different possible reasons why her connection for her medicine was cut off lately. But this one, she hadn’t seen coming, for some reason. That was foolish on her part. After all, what else would have come from letting their deal continue? Taking away the medication someone else needed to be healthy?
Even if they were willing, even if they thought that they didn’t need it. She shouldn’t have agreed to it. They still needed it, regardless of what they thought.
Miki’s fingers nervously fumbled with the screen of her phone, eyeing the article of the recent suicide of a certain citizen of the city. The name and the chosen picture...they were all too familiar to her. He had been found hanging in his bedroom in his apartment, after he must’ve been dead for maybe half a week before being discovered. That was the downside of being a loner with no one in your life, wasn’t it? You go, who’s gonna know?
Pressing the power button, Miki put her phone aside and rubbed her face. She felt sick. This was her fault. If anyone knew him, what would they think? What happened to his medication? He was doing so well. What happened?
His medication had been hers for the longest time. He wasn’t doing well at all. Just because he looked like he was, didn’t mean that he truly was.
She might as well have put that noose around his neck herself. She felt like that’s exactly what she’d done.
A knock at the door. The noise by itself startled Miki, as deep into her stressed thoughts as she was. “Wh...who is it?”
Miki’s eyes widened, fixated on her door for a few seconds, before she realized she needed to answer them. “C-coming.” Standing, Miki needed a moment to even remember how to move properly, before she started towards the door. It was a moment that felt far longer than it truly was. She didn’t want to wrap her head around why the police would possibly be here. Or anyone, really. Did it have anything to do with this guy’s death? How much could they possibly know?
Unlocking the door, Miki opened it up, greeted by the sight of three men, one seemingly a detective, who promptly allowed her to see his badge. Briefly, Miki could see him glancing past her, subtly seeing what her apartment looked like. However it was just a moment before his brown eyes met her uncertain blue eyes.
“Yes? I mean--good afternoon.”
“Sorry for the intrusion. I’m investigating a recent death, and I’m trying to track down anyone who might’ve known this gentleman.” Identification. Much to Miki’s worry, it was most definitely the photo ID of the guy she was plenty familiar with. “You know him?”
Did she tell the truth? Lie? Don’t lie. This isn’t a mess you want to get buried in. It seemed unavoidable though. No matter how she looked at it, she was affiliated with him, wasn’t she?
“I...I’ve spoken with him, a few times. I...I don’t know him very well, though.”
He seemed to nod thoughtfully at the answer, studying Miki’s face for a moment, before glancing at the notes he had with him.
“I see...Miss Naoki, he didn’t have many people in his life, it doesn’t seem.”
Perturbing lack of response. Once again, the detective glanced up at her. Nodding a bit to himself, he cleared his throat.
“You don’t need to be so nervous. However...his phone didn’t have a lock. As few contacts as he had, I can recall, your name was among them. In fact, your name was most of his recent call log.”
Ah. Miki was simply struggling to at least look like she was still calm. She didn’t want to be here. She didn’t want to be speaking to this man, she didn’t want any of this. She wanted to go back and have nothing to do with this dead man in her own phone’s contacts.
When she had said nothing for a few seconds, he spoke up once again.
“I understand you may not want to. But, you will have to come with us. It’s only to answer a few questions, but understand, we have to keep eyes on you in the meantime, in case anything you know might help us know more about what happened to him. There were a few...things, strange about his residence and his background, so any information we can gather about him would be helpful.”
He could question her here then, couldn’t he? Yet, here they were, a group prepared for someone who’d probably want to run on impulse. There was already suspicion in the air about Miki, or else he wouldn’t be asking her to let them take her.
She knew that. She had a feeling he was aware that she knew, as well. No one here was dumb to what was going on.
“Y...y-yeah, sure. Can I get my stuff, first?”
