Daredevil and AWOLNATION
Not entirely convinced AWOLNATION’s album Run isn’t about Daredevil. From Dreamers: “I got a lot to love / I got a lot to lose / At this point in my life I’d rather die than lie to you / I’m gonna swim in hell / I’ve got a rebel yell“
This is about how Matt can’t stop being the Daredevil, even once Foggy finds out. He can’t keep the secret, he can’t stop himself from rebelling. From Run: “I am a human being capable of doing terrible things“ and “You people are mistaken if you think that I’m awake and celebrating anything that I’ve become“
Matt’s perspective about being Daredevil. Any time anyone’s like “does he get off on beating people up?!” From Windows: “Do we really know the way the wind blows? / All we really safe around our shadows? / Through our windows / Okay / Off in the red, dance, dance with the dead“
Matt’s off in “the Red,” “dancing with the dead,” and the Daredevil’s really sort of his shadow. Also I see the wind lyric as a reference to morality: is it right what he does? or is it wrong? From Jailbreak: “See, I've been working on a jailbreak / Got no time for a new faith / Any moment they'll replace me / Should have tried to get to know you / I've been working on my timing / Insecurity beside me“
Matt’s insecure about himself, so he’s been “working on his timing” when it comes to spilling his secret to Foggy. But he should have realized that Foggy doesn’t need to know at the “right time,” just now.
From Holy Roller: “Hold your head up high / everyone can see / Not afraid that I need your love / Raining from my eyes, crashing at my knees“ and “With my swollen eyes I need your love / Tell me where you hide / tell you where I bleed / Maybe I’m too shy I need your love“
Matt just wants to be accepted. By others, by himself. Needs Foggy to forgive him.
From I Am: “These friends of mine will come and go / I’m the first to leave and last to know / I’ll be swimming in a face of flames“ and “All of these things made me who I am“
“World on fire,” “face of flames” come ON. Again, I see Matt/Foggy in this. From Woman Woman: “Won't you see me in the dark / I may be worthless without you / I'll never decide to replace you / Amen, the worst is behind us now“
This, I actually see as Claire & Matt thing. Matt needs Claire: not just to patch him up, but because she, despite her protestations, proves that the world needs him.
From Lie Love Live Love: “I’ve been waiting here for hours / Yeah I really love you so / This has turned into disaster lately / We’re the only ones who know / Lie love, live love, lie love thy neighbor / I’ve been wasting time for hours / Yeah this weight is all I know / This has turned into disaster / We’re the only ones who know“ and then “Is it just a Saturday night / It just another just another lover’s Saturday night / Allow me to explain”
Matt/Foggy for realsies. “This has turned into disaster lately” is like the understatement of their friendship. And “Allow me to explain” is Matt at the reveal.
From Like People, Like Plastic: “I stand alone and curse at the sky / I stand alone beside you / I’ve never felt so alone in my life / Baby I stand alone beside you“
This is like Foggy’s theme song, guys. Right after he found out about Matt. From Drinking Lightning: “There will be no strings / I'm worth nothing / When the sad wind / From the night's end / Help me pretend / That I'm your sin / In the dark space / The touch of your soft face / In front of a fireplace / Would you believe me? / If the phone rings / Tell him nothing / Or maybe one thing / That hell is coming“
I can’t even. This is Daredevil’s song. DAREDEVILS FUCKING SONG. About losing his father, about becoming The Daredevil, about needing someone to need him, about asking for help, about needing to believe that he’s a necessary evil. “Hell is coming,” Daredevil’s fucking tagline right there.
Do you see what I’m talking about? The last time I had this whole “This album is TOTALLY ABOUT this show” it was MCR’s album The Black Parade to Supernatural.
