The newly poured top floor of 53W53, formerly the MoMA Tower. The apexes will be constructed this summer to officially top out the 1,050 ft (320m) residential skyscraper. There is a really well curated exhibition on weathervanes on at the Folk Art Museum until January of 2022- with beautiful examples of old metal objects weathered by time and exposure to the elements. This eagle from the 1860s shows genuine verdigris (but that effect can be faked by using a solution called liver of sulfur)

🐣🐰#HappyEaster from the earliest portrayal of the mythical Easter rabbit known in American art! This popular #JohannConradGilbert watercolor and ink is dated 1795-1800 and part of our vast #AbbyAldrichRockefeller #FolkArtMuseum collection. 🐇 Pennsylvania Dutch folklore held that the rabbit laid the eggs that he delivered to children for Easter. The legend probably stems from the Teutonic era in Germany, when it was believed that such furry creatures laid eggs in springtime to honor the goddess Ostara, from whose name the word “Easter” derives. Ostara is credited with having transformed birds into animals. #ColonialWilliamsburg

The Influences of Folk Art

Folk Art is usually not considered a part of fine art. This is due to its own unique traditions that sets it apart from other mediums in the art field. Folk art expresses cultural identity by conveying shared community values and appreciation of beauty. It encompasses a range of decorative media, including cloth, wood, paper, clay, metal and more. If traditional materials are inaccessible, new materials are often substituted, resulting in contemporary expressions of traditional folk art forms. Folk art reflects traditional art forms of diverse community groups — ethnic, tribal, religious, occupational, geographical, age- or gender-based — who identify with each other and society at large. Folk artists traditionally learn skills and techniques through apprenticeships in informal community settings, though they may also be formally educated.

There are different types of Folk Art including: Antique folk art, Contemporary folk art, and its influence on mainstream art. How does Folk Art influence other artist in other arts mediums? Pablo Picasso was influenced by African mask and tribal sculptures. Antique and Contemporary folk art with its influence in quilting, and Carousels.

The American Folk Art Museum in New York City and in Philadelphia are among the few that display the beauty of Folk Art and its importance to a cultures identity. When we think about Art, we must consider it at a larger scale. It is more than the fine arts we are familiar with; it is the creation and imagination that the artist is influenced by his or her culture. The Arts preserves our cultural identity.
