Dale has seen Miguel asleep before. A lot. Sleeping curled up under the slide in recess as kids, sleeping at his desk in math, even sleeping on a park bench after racing Dale there.
So he doesn't know why this is so different to him.
Miguel has been stressed out of his mind for weeks about exams and grading. Dale hasn't seen him lately without coffee in one hand and a study guide in the other.
So this... this is nice.
Even if he's going to hurt his neck sleeping like that.
Trying to be as quiet as possible, Dale sets the fresh coffee he had brought for Miguel on the edge of the desk and snatches up his pillow from his bed. It takes some wrangling, and he has to be careful not to pull on Miguel's wildly curly hair, but he manages to get the pillow under his head.
After a moment of thought, he tucks a blanket over his friend, too.
And then he notices the smudges of pastels on his friends wrists, and something in his heart twists slightly. They don't talk about it much, but Miguel is an artist, and a good one at that. Dale is glad he's somehow managed to find the time to work on some of that around his exams.
He steps back and looks at Miguel again, leaving the room silently once he decides the other boy won't wake up cold and with an aching neck.
The next day, when Miguel smiles at him and slides a portrait of the two of them together- based off a photo they had taken several years back- Dale wonders why his heart leaps in his chest.

( Spyros is a German shepherd pitbull terrier mix maybe even belgian malinois. From what the shelter told us. And he is legit the definition of all a damn toddler for being a big 6 month old puppy.. Now I can feel Follia’s pain 😭✌️ )
