okay I am arising from my grave because I have got to talk about this. So. Let's get some context going.

Bear with me cause I'm going to talk about metal (I know, I know, please trust me tho) so there's this genre called viking metal which is an extreme metal subgenre that is essentially a fusion of death metal and folk metal but focusing on norse paganism. There is a band called equilibrium which got their start doing viking metal and while I don't listen to them anymore for a variety of reasons, they won't leave my mind for one of the most baffling decisions I've ever seen any band make

This sets a general expectation for how they will sound. On the very same album, just two tracks earlier they made this song:

You have to give it a second, but that's just... what possessed them to make viking metal dubstep?????????? Why did they do this? No other song in the album is like this. It sticks out like such a sore thumb.

I've listened to a lot of metal over the years. I've heard black metal about BDSM with an operatic vocalist shifting between gorgeous falsetto and murderous screeches. I've heard swing metal sung exclusively in Latin, I've heard hyperpop metal, I've heard a former girl group popstar do some odd fusion of electro pop and melodic death metal, and a synth metal band make a song about working a shitty dead end retail job with a jazz interlude about that one potion seller bit. You know the one.

None of those have the same staying power in my brain as Equilibrium's baffling decision to make Born to be Epic. I just can't wrap my head around it.
