Saturday 4th May 2013 - Find out what Fondation Sonore is about
For me that’s probably one of the most mysterious party concept of Brussels.
The name, the music.. even the place they choose is for me a total unknown territory.
I would love to attend one of their party, it seems really good and well organised, but I must confess that I can’t listen for more than 3 seconds to any video or mix from the guest artists.
Yet, my tastes are not the only parameters for an event to be part of this agenda...
As I said, from what I can see they seem good and if you’re into that kind of music, you shouldn’t be disappointed!

Fondation Sonore 01: Ancient Methods vs Kareem – Exstinctio Conscientia Review
Industrial and experimental leaning techno collectif-turned-label Fondation Sonore has unveiled its first EP Ancient Methods Vs Kareem – Exstinctio Conscientia (available at Hard Wax and will be available on their website on September 1st). We first became acquainted with Fondation Sonore back in June by featuring the world premiere of the documentary Paris/Berlin: 20 Years of Underground Techno directed by Amélie Ravalec, who also spearheads the project and now the label. For the past year the project has brought parties with artists like Adam X, Ancient Methods, Orphx and Northern Structures, and as a label it’s expected to carry the ethos along the lines of “refusing any kind of system….with the use of the primitive and violent sound and the wrath of the mechanic throb” to quote words from their website. The structure of EP is very similar to 2010 Sonic Groove release Ancient Methods Vs Adam X – Cardiac Dysrhythmia where two artists bring different takes of two tracks and this time it’s Kareem that’s up against AM, providing an interesting ‘compare & contrast’ experience. There’s no doubt that Ancient Methods put out some of the finest industrial techno over the past 5 years with their Method series as well as Ugandan Method, a collab project with Regis. Might not be as widely known as AM, but Kareem is no newcomer to the scene – as a founder of Berlin-based techno imprint Zhark Recording, he has been producing heavy stomping techno since 1996.
With Exstinctio Conscientia, the message delivered – given the medieval, dark time vibe running through the EP, imagine cryptic Latin words written on dried animal skin with a quill pen – is clear: we are at War. Engulfed in flames, the walls are coming down, weapons are fired, war horses are galloping, the ultimate chaos. AM’s signature war drums is forceful as usual hammering out the sense of urgency and menace that runs deep throughout the 12”. Kareem’s approach may not be as louder but he keeps the tension high with the sharper groove and colder cleaner metallic sound aesthetic. AM interpretation of “Zealots” is layered with decisively thick and heavy noise while their take on “Dämmerung der Parhelia” exhibits slowed-down tempo and dungeon-esque ritualistic hypnotism, especially when the heavy drum retreats to the background as the nightmarish whispering (in the masked villain’s voice) starts. Kareem’s interpretation of “Zealots” and “Dämmerung der Parhelia” is nothing short of AM’s, channeling the energy more densely and to the point. In fact in my mind, Kareem interpretation of “Zealots” is the one that steals the shows; placed as the opener, it’s an overture of racing crescendo that carefully layers everything from the deep rolling bass to signal beep, ultimately setting the high benchmark for the rest of the EP.
