Because of your mention of 2008 livejournal, I ended up browsing some of your old posts. Somehow its really comforting to know you haven't changed. There are still the "day of cooking" posts, the "what is my life" posts, and the "how did I hurt myself this time" posts. The only real changes are where you work, where you live, and the fandom you're focused on. I don't know why I like your consistency, but it makes me happy.

LOL! Well, find what works and go with it, I suppose :D I rather like the idea that I have a system for blogging that sort of matches up with a system for life.

This varies so much by industry. In law, the standard is a 5-10 pg memo or motion.

It does vary, for sure, but I feel like if a law firm was hiring and requested writing samples they would, at least, be way more specific :D “Some writing samples” with no dates or wordcounts screams “We think we should ask for writing samples but probably don’t know what to do with them.”

Most places I know, unless they want you for a journalism/academic writing/law position, just use the cover letter as your writing sample. I’ve been told multiple times that my cover letter is what got me an interview; apparently coherent business writing is rarer than I thought.

Yikes! That is alarming. Your idea is a good one. May I also suggest emailing/meeting with your favorite professor? They may not be able to directly help you, but at the very least, they are more familiar with the system and will have more influence.

I’ll try that! Although my actual Favorite Professor is out in Nicaragua doing research (but still teaching phonology, apparently, via Blackboard meet-ups). But yeah, I will see if I can talk to someone in the department, that is a good idea. Thank you!

How do you decide on the "things that must be included" list? Random word generator?

Usually I just pick the first three or four things that come to mind that are 1) a little silly and 2) totally plausible.

I just learned today that they are working to bring a nhl team to Las Vegas. It would be our first professional team in town. A game relying on ice is the first sport to have a team based in this desert locked city.
