i think it would be a very non-extravagant, classically blunt katniss statement. it’s totally out of the left field, and they’re probably doing something extremely mundane like chopping vegetables up for dinner or folding laundry. it’s something that she’s mulled over for a long time in her head, but that still doesn’t make it any easier to broach the subject - especially because i think she’d be particularly conscious that it’s something he wants so badly and so she wouldn’t want to mess it up.

i genuinely think she’d just come out with it, like “i think we should have a baby.” or something else along those lines. very much on the noise and to the point, while she continues with her task at hand and he absolutely freezes before cautiously resuming whatever he was doing. “that’s not funny, katniss.”, perhaps slightly huffily as he assumes she’s pulling his leg because it’s just so... unexpected. but, he’d pretty quickly realise that she isn’t teasing him, and she’d reassure him of that much.

i don’t think that would be the final conversation on the matter by any means, because i think they would have a lot of things to discuss and work through even before they started actively trying to get pregnant, but it’s certainly a start. he would worry that she might be feeling pressured into it because she knows that he wants to be a father, and she’d always have the lingering fear in the back of her head about something out of her control happening to her (as of yet unborn) child.

and i also think that peeta’s potential apprehension to bring a child into the world is so overlooked in comparison to katniss (which, in my opinion, is too often interpreted as her simply not wanting to be a mother). peeta had a less than ideal childhood and grew up in an abusive home, and that’s before you take into the account everything he went through in the games and as part of his captivity. he would, i’m certain, worry about what kind of a parent he would be and also worry about how the things he/katniss went through would affect their children. these are all things that they would have to deal with and discuss before they made that final decision, but you know by the point that katniss (not so subtly) tells him that she’s ready to start a family her mind has long since been made up.
