Being trans isn't a mental or physical disability/disease.
@ireallylovebread I’m totally in agreement with you.
I like what Von Scully, author of the blog Tra(n)velling Man wrote:
The more understanding each of us are when it comes to our own or another person’s gender, the better the outcome will be for everyone involved in the conversation. “There is no us versus them”, “It’s, I’m experiencing something this person isn’t. And that doesn’t make one person more or less acceptable.”
Distress and impairment, considered essential characteristics of mental disorders among transgender people are caused by the discrimination, stigma, lack of acceptance, violence, and abuse they face on an unfortunately regular basis. There is stress that’s created as a result of having it reflected back to you that there’s something wrong with you.
A vast majority of trans experience rejection, social isolation related to their feelings about gender, most commonly by family members. And they are also a victim of violence related to their gender identity. There is stigma associated with both mental disorder and transgender identity. The precarious legal status, human rights violations and barriers to appropriate care are much higher among transgender people.
