I am very tired of not needing you. There is a wire above me that I have my fists around, and I’m pulling myself across some big empty gap in the earth and I’m making it. I remember once you put your coat down for me to walk on like you didn’t want my feet to get cold or dirty or something, but I never liked the obligation. You’re long gone now, and I’m making leaps over the trampoline flooring and I’m getting very far. See? I can run into mud and not get stuck. I don’t need your cotton cover, but my ankles are getting weak. And there’s a blister forming on my palm where the wire cuts in so maybe you could come back for a minute and carry me? I don’t need you to! I don’t need you! But if you wanted to hold me next to you and set me down on the other side of whatever this is, you could. I wouldn’t say no. I would even crawl back to the beginning to make it easier for you to find me cause not needing you is hard.

Dear Mom and Dad, Sometimes when I wake up in the morning I imagine that there are snowballs hurling towards my face and I can’t duck in time. And then I remember that it’s October. That I am warm here, tucked in and covered by all of my lies and all of the tiny truths you fed me as a baby just melted along the way somehow. Hey- maybe we will all rip each other apart and throw our secrets in a hat and play charades until we’re all sobbing and drunk and empty but I am just wishing. I know that lies are the things you tell when you’re so scared of being yourself that you have to step in red paint and look like a flag just to be a part of something. Please at least wave at me from across the street. Dear Alex, There was a fly on the wall in your apartment and you swatted at it. I am the fly. I am that one chain link on a swing you sat on in fifth grade. I am the important words you say in the middle of a blackout. You wake up blank. You wake up and you don’t think “What does that mean” but I do. I always do. I have analyzed the way you chew so much that I am convinced one bite means no and two must mean “I do”. I want you to know that if we never speak again I will always wonder if there was a lever somewhere I could have pulled you back with. And I will always wonder if you draped your sweater over it on purpose and twiddled your thumbs and avoided sobriety just to hide it from me. I want you to know that there are layers and layers of words on my tongue that I sift through just to keep you interested and sometimes I slip up. You’ve probably noticed.
