Summary: All it takes is one little change to send everything spiraling out of control. A little push to start the cascade of events in a new direction. A matter of timing being off, of a moment of fear instead of reason, or the less likely of two choices being selected. One initial change and suddenly it’s all different.
And maybe this time, they can do it better.

Note from submitter: It's part of a series, but it's a good read on it's own. I love myself some good canon divergence
When karma hit the block and people thought they got away with something. You stole something now you wondering why you losing everything you touch. Oh you dumb dumb. Smdh 🤦🏾♀️
Everything begins with a spark, a cry, a bang. All things in the universe began long ago. A deal made, a plan set in motion by the ancients of a collapsing world. For all time they will search in spirit, guided by the will of gods unseen, until they find those who will save them. They desired nothing less that perfection. They even went as far to bring thriving empires to ruin in hopes of triggering a change. For millenniums planets, empires, even galaxies rose from the void and fell just as suddenly. All of them inhabiting heroes with the potential to save what the ancients could not. All failed, none ever realized what was needed to achieve the goal. Until during one particular quest one of the destined came very close. Close enough that these ancients, turned cold and capricious by time, allowed one to live after death. They allowed one to live in hopes that the one would be able to guide the next iteration that would arise five thousand years later. They chose her to pave the way for the arrival of the gods.
Eliza Reiys is very aware that there is a great and dangerous power that lays dormant inside of her, she is a child of the green sun, it is her birthright. But it cannot be unlocked; not yet anyway, it is far too powerful and as she is now her body would surely turn to ash. That is why for the mean time Eliza has taken to learning other things. In the spring she would begin her education at a prestigious boarding school on a small island in the east with her friend Kiraleen Kakaina.
In the fall a person in a red cape appeared to her, muttered something, and touched Eliza’s forehead.
The sky lit up electric green
Eighteen years later
There was a crack from the other side of the communication port and Epsilon fought the urge to flinch. She saw Glaycia’s fist clench the same way it does when Phoenix is being particularly obtuse.
“You did what?!” The bite in Glaycia’s voice draws Epsilons thoughts back to the issue at hand.
“I did as you instructed,” Epsilon’s voice lacked inflection, “The insurrection will not be bothering us anymore.”
“No, I instructed you to take care of the problem quietly and efficiently. Not create martyrs for a REVOLUTION.”
“They wouldn’t dare.”
“Oh they dare,” there was a touch more bitterness in Glaycia’s voice than usual, “I’m up to my ears in filthy little upstarts. You should’ve heard the way Duplica of all people spoke to me.”
Epsilon sighed, “I covered it up just fine. Anyone who comes looking will think it was Overdrive again. I want to drag The Director back into the spotlight.”
Glaycia rolled her eyes, “Cassidy is no concern of mine. Need I remind you how imperative it is to keep our… allies happy?”
Epsilon looked away, “No, no you do not.”
“This is your problem Epsilon,” her eyes were like ice, “Fix it.” A cruel smirk spread across her face, “After all, I sure would hate to lose a great asset such as yourself.”
The monitor went black and Epsilon cringed. Glaycia was terrible, truly despite her supposedly good intentions id didn’t change the fact that she still lied, killed, and cheated to get what she wanted. But Glaycia wasn’t anywhere near as bad as what Epsilon would have to deal with if anyone ever found out that she wasn’t completely loyal to Overdrive.
Elsewhere
Levi had no interest in Glaycia or her allies or her war, and yet is seems like everyday someone was trying to recruit her.
“This is for the good of us all. Please Levi, you can’t really think that after the role you’ve played thus far you will be allowed to remain neutral and live.” Duplica said.
“It works for Sara.”
“Sara has a…different situation. But that’s beside the point.”
“Do you really believe what she says?!” Levi asked incredulously, “You really believe this is about anything besides Glaycia’s ego?!”
Duplica sighed, “No, I don’t. But this is really in my best interest to do what Glaycia wants so it doesn’t matter what I think of her or what she’s doing.”
“And we both know that you have other reasons that I won’t say because you’ll-“
Duplica scowled
“Do that.” Levi let a small smile poke through.
“No, this isn’t about me. This is about you, you deliberately oppositional…” Duplica pressed her lips together and then sighed, “Look, we have to win this war Levianne. It would be in your best interest to join us.”
“Out of curiosity, did this whole ‘we have to win the war’ thing work on Sara?”
Duplica didn’t respond.
“I thought not,” Levi turned and spread her wings, “Thanks for the offer Duplica but Glaycia’s a horrible person and I highly recommend you get away from her.
“Levi wait!” Duplica pleaded.
“You won’t see me again.” And then she was gone.
The next day somewhere in the middle of the ocean
“This isn’t just about us anymore! We are putting innocent lives on the line for our own selfish purposes!” Aqua exclaimed.
Phoenix nodded, “I agree, Glaycia’s gone too far this time.”
Duplica scoffed, “Don’t you of all people talk about going too far.”
Phoenix scowled and flames curled around her fingers, “What’s that supposed to mean?\\\ Weren’t you part of the insurrection, they’re notorious for going too far.”
“Don’t talk about that,” Duplica snapped, “Aqua’s a pirate and Phoenix, didn’t you kill your husband.”
“He was pushy and I’m in a relationship.” Phoenix said dryly.
“Three’s a crowd.” Aqua said and you could practically hear the smirk in her voice.
Duplica sighed, “In all seriousness, we’re in a little too deep for you two to just quit now. If you do Glaycia will write you off as traitors and I like you guys, I don’t want your blood on my hands.”
Phoenix laughed, “You can try.”
Offshore of a small island
“Any progress on our search Levianne?”
“No. Remember that she isn’t too keen on us anyways especially me, what am I supposed to tell her when I find her?.”
Levi had been tasked with finding Elsie Ferrick-Bourland, a fusion of two people Levi used to know. Only problem was that Elsie was running from them, from everyone really, and the last time Levi had been asked to find her Elsie gave her a broken arm for all her efforts and split.
“Tell her what she wants to hear. If worse comes to worse split her and kill them both, we can not afford to lose someone so important to anyone else.”
Levi hesitated
Explosia gave an exasperated sigh, “Just take care of it Levianne. I don’t particularly care how as long as it gets done.”
“Okay.”
“Good.”
The communication port went black, Levi knew exactly what Exposia had meant with that warning but in a few minutes it wouldn’t matter. Everyone would be dead and there would be no use in worrying about it. She stared at the tall warehouse; it had been rebuilt since Siren’s unfortunate accident and would serve as a fine trap if she set it right.
On the island of Mariner
Neo had no intention of letting Levi escape this time, though she knew this was her trap if she was going to die she was at least going to drag everyone else down with her.
‘Peace agreement, right, sure Levi.’
Neo knew that Levi had yet forget about what she did to her. Her sensors picked up movement in the trees behind her; she supposed Sara hadn’t forgotten about her little tragedy either. Glaycia, Sara, Levi, Epsilon, and Glaycia’s ‘allies’ if Glaycia was as in control as she said she was; this would be fun.
In the air over the ocean
Epsilon was starting to have second thoughts. At first she believed that taking down The Director was the most important thing but Sigma, Gamma, and Kasandra's words were in her head. The concerning message from Kasandra made her sure about a lot of things. After all Kasandra was a diviner, she knew best. All the message said was,
‘Glaycia’s gone too far. Make her pay.’
That was enough to make her tell Beta to tip off Neo, Sara, and the Insurrection about their location.
Half and hour later
Glaycia, Duplica, Epsilon, Phoenix, and Aqua entered the tall warehouse under the impression they were alone and would be receiving a new weapon from Beta, Epsilon’s ‘sister’ who she had convinced to make them tech like she does for Overdrive. However Beta had played them right into the hands of Levi and Neo, whoever got to them first really.
“I thought I’d see you here.” Levi was waiting for them up in the rafters, sword already drawn.
“Hello Levianne,” Neo entered and when she did the doors locked behind her, “I see the you’ve gotten good at setting traps.”
“I’d like to thank the seven of you for playing right into my hand.” Sara said, very suddenly appearing from a dark corner with her swords drawn from her cane and in the place of her red glasses was a red blindfold.
“That’s quite the fashion statement you’re making there Sara, the red really brings out your scar tissue,” Neo mocked, “But I guess you wouldn’t know that.”
Levi flew down from the rafters and pointed her sword at Neo and she laughed.
“Are you really going to go toe to toe with my powers after what happened all those years ago?”
“I’m stronger now,” Levi practically growled.
Duplica rolled her eyes, “So are we going to fight or…”
Epsilon shook her head, “No, we aren’t.”
There was something small attached to the wall and Epsilon hit it with a blast of electricity and the walls began to shake.
“Epsilon!” Neo shrieked
Cracks wound up the walls and triggered another one of those devices.
“Forgive me Gamma,” Epsilon muttered to herself.
Glaycia created an ice shield around herself, Duplica used a power she must have picked up from Jamie to turn her skin to steel, Phoenix and Aqua embraced and created a shield of fire and water around themselves, and Levi tried to fly out. She would have made it if she had seen that piece of the ceiling collapse, but she didn’t and it hit her. As she fell everything faded to black.
Standing a bit behind them, watching these events unfold were two figures clad in red and black respectively, just out of sight of everyone in the room. The one in red had black hair that was braided on top of their head and held a glaive that glowed red. The one in black had long brown hair and was surrounded by a green light. When the ceiling caved in they looked at each other and jumped from the balcony.
On the island of Linley
Glaycia’s head was pounding, the last thing she remembered was the roof of that warehouse on Mariner caving in and Levi…
“This is going to work, it has to. Remember we were here the last time.” A voice cut into Glaycia’s thoughts.
“I know. I also remember Levi dying.” Another voice said, it almost sounded like Kerry.
“It’ll be fine, we’re not the ones playing hero this time.”
“We sort of are. You should get back to the others, what I have to do next…you won’t like it very much.”
“Remember,” the voice Glaycia didn’t recognize said, “just let them play hero for a while, we will play our part in time.”
There was a sound like air being pushed apart and the person that sounded like Kerry sighed. A sound like ticking clocks and chiming rang through the air, when it stopped Glaycia sat up and both people were gone. The others began to come to and Glaycia’s head swirled with thoughts of murder, among other things. But it seemed she had sat up too fast because when she turned to make sure Duplica was okay Glaycia felt really sick and then everything went black again.
Months in the future, but not many
On a cliff stands a group of people ranging in ages fifteen to twenty-nine. A person in a red cape overlooks the ruins of a palace.
“There’s no saving them. I’m sorry.” Kerry couldn’t face them.
“What does that mean?!” Charlotte exclaimed.
“Alura can’t help them now. The Great Undoing…I don’t know what it did to them but it’s irreversible.”
“We’ve created an impossible challenge,” Gwendolyn said in horror, “It’s over, we lose.”
“No…” Veronica trailed off quietly.
“Actually, Veronica’s right. We may have created an impossible challenge, but they didn’t.” Nitrine said with a smile.
“So something we did tripped up the timeline?” Milo asked.
“Not necessarily something we did,” Damara said tensely, “we are not supposed to be alive. Or rather,” the Seer of Doom gestured to Eliza, “she is not supposed to be alive.”
“So Kerry has to go back and kill her to reset the timeline and save us all.” Alura clarified.
“Yes, and when the timeline collapses we take shelter in the void.” Veronica added.
“Neither Time nor Space can touch us in there.” Gwendolyn explained.
“And then we travel to the new alpha timeline together.” Veronica finished
“But I will stay with the alpha heroes.” Said Kerry
“And so the Knight of Time saves the Mage of Space, the Seer and Heiress of Void allow us to take shelter in their domain, the Witch of Life keeps us alive for however long our journey to the new timeline takes, so what are the rest of us supposed to do?” Mila asked.
“You’ve already done so much,” Eliza said gratefully, “The Muse and Rogue of Heart kept us sane when The Great Undoing came, the Seer of Doom guided us on our path, the Maid of Hope gave us everything we needed to find our answers, and the Thief of Mind gave us the mental clarity to understand those answers. You have helped us so much already, let us play the part of the heroes for now.”
“We will stop the great undoing,” Kerry said, “We have to. For the first part I’m going to need Eliza’s help.
They wouldn’t stop The Great Undoing. Gwen and Damara as Seers of Void and Doom would already know this. For a true Seer would know where luck and grace are given, where they are absent, and most importantly where they don’t matter at all. A Seer would know that victory doesn’t matter in a reality where all else is doomed to fail. After all, what sort of story would this be? One with our most important heroes left to stay cadavers. Certainly not one the alpha timeline would allow, and not one she’d allow either.
In the alpha timeline, yesterday
Kasandra had seen this coming for years. Before she was never sure of what it meant but then seeing Kerry’s dead body, the first blood of the new war, triggered something deep in her mind. Glaycia could no longer be allowed to do as she pleased. Because she was dangerous and they were doomed. So she let Epsilon know, that would set everything into place and stop this war before it started, by killing most of Kassandra's friends, but it would still end. With Glaycia out of play Overdrive and Purity would crush the Insurrection.
In the night
Kerry was not alone in their quest. In fact they would receive more help than most heroes in any quest ever.
Except for maybe The Empress. But that’s another story from centuries long gone.
All of Kerry’s help came from a very gifted diviner, and a Seer of Hope who was already very aware of what was to come.
“You’re the Seer of Hope?!” Kerry said incredulously.
“Would you expect anything else?”
“Well, I always thought being a seer would’ve caused people to have actual genuine empathy.”
“You’re honest,” the Seer mused, “How refreshing.”
“If I thought you had emotions I would think you don’t like me very much.”
“You aren’t alive in this timeline. I never knew you.”
But you remember me,” Kerry insisted.
“Of course I do. I know what you need and I know that nothing I can say will derail your quest.”
“I have to stop The Great Undoing.”
“No, you need to kill Eliza. It is our only chance for survival.”
“Why would I care about you?”
“I didn’t say me. You care very much about your friends though, correct.”
“I do.”
“Then save them. I’ll do what I can.”
“Won’t The Director get in the way.”
“The Director hasn’t known enough to be able to be in my way for years.”
“Sure…”
They disappeared from that dark alleyway in flashes of red and gold. The Knight of Time back to their quest and the Seer of Hope back to where she hides in plain daylight, beside The Director, at the start of the war that would tear the planet to pieces.
In time, after Eliza’s death lots of things would change. Such as The Director’s design for Epsilon and inevitable favoritism, which in turn sparked a bitter rivalry between Epsilon and Neo, in her rage and desire to be better than Epsilon Neo would hurt many people, among these people would be Sara Scarlentine, Duplica, Aqua, Phoenix, and many others, who she would blind, that beautiful academy in the east they attended would close down because of it, but not before it would graduate four students who in the years to come would work for Project Overdrive. Years later, when Sara had grown and learned she would meet Glaycia again and be extended an offer she would refuse and Glaycia would instead work with Duplica, Phoenix, Aqua, and others whom she knew from Lumina that had become powerful in the years they were apart. But Glaycia wasn’t the only one building an army, The Insurrection had recovered from the loss of Lars and their warehouse in the southeast and Project Overdrive’s numbers nearly doubled because most Lumina students found themselves recruited, but that was only natural, Lumina was The Director’s project. Lumina would reopen so there would be an excuse to pull more people into the coming war. In the end the three armies would clash and only a few would be left, the Seer of Hope would leave her dear director for dead, the Seer and Heiress of Void would rip their small party into their domain taking the island of Lumina with them and condemn themselves to eons of solace with only the Witch of Life to keep them alive. They would meet those from the beta timeline and Kerry would rejoin their friends. Then they would go back to their planet, which had healed, from the hard reset that was The Great Undoing and initiate a quest specifically designed so they could succeed. They heroes of Space, Time, Mind, Heart, Hope, Doom, Void, and Life would become the new gods when the universe fell. Because that’s what happens, in the end even the universe falls and all will fade to black.
So deep brown eyes become gray and the goddess of space will awaken, Cosmos. From the darkness she creates her companion and names them Eternity. Then a bright green flash will bring about a goddess with shocking white hair and a dazzling smile who calls herself Vridi, The Green Sun.
Then there was motion as Cosmos, Eternity, and Vridi created the universe and the goddess of Time would appear. Time would be the wisest of the gods and when the three creators made beings with power it was Time who arbitrated rules to keep them in check.
But when the three creators made living beings a new goddess sprang forth to watch over them, her name was Life. Life was in charge of every soul that every living creature possessed and was to collaborate with Time to make them grow.
From the space the three creators had not yet filled sprung a dark goddess with black eyes and little to say, her name was Void. By the order of Cosmos herself Void would create a barrier between their world and the world of their creations.
Out beyond the void a rift opened, it wasn’t potential like Void was. This space was simply darkness and from this darkness came monsters that desired to destroy what the three creators had made. Void took it upon herself to deal with the problem, she would fail because she would come in contact with the ruler of this darkness, ivory skin and inky black hair that seemed to just trail off back into the darkness, her name was Furthest. She turned Void on Cosmos with promises of not having to live in the darkness forever though she had no intention of making good on her promise. Void used her powers to help Furthest create a demon far more powerful than Furthest’s horrorterrors, they called her The Demoness.
To protect their creations Time, Cosmos, Eternity, and Vridi combined their powers to create three guardians to serve under Time, enforce her rules, and if it ever becomes and issue, fight Void, Furthest, or The Demoness. The names of these Guardians were Heart, Mind, and Doom. Heart was the embodiment of feeling and granted the creations emotion and senses. Heart was also to keep Doom and Mind from forgetting mercy and compassion. Mind granted the creations wisdom and sentience, but only the ones she deemed worthy of such gifts. Mind was far more judgmental than Heart. She was to keep Heart and Doom from acting rashly as both were prone to emotion and bias. Mind was above that, Mind remained completely objective in regards to judgment. Doom was the one to actually bring rule breakers before Time and his opinion counted most as he was most focused on the issue at hand and less so the individual or individuals like Heart or a just trial and subsequent punishment like Mind. All Doom cared about was taking care of it and restoring order. Furthest believed that if she could turn him he could bring about the deaths of the three creators and to an extent that was true, Doom did possess the power to destroy anything, even a god. However Doom was very dutiful, that was how the creators made him to be and granted him that power so that in the event that Heart and/or Mind was strayed away he could destroy them. Doom almost destroyed Void when she extended him Furthest’s offer.
Before, the gods were for the most part, at a stalemate. There was no death for their creations and therefore nothing sentient could be destroyed by Furthest or Void, only banished to wander the dark forever or turned to their side. But when the creations began to realized, thanks to the wisdom Mind had granted them eons ago, that the gods couldn’t really end them they began to break the rules more, Time banishing them out into the void or even the furthest ring just delivered them to Furthest who turned them into horrorterrors. So they created a solution, Death. After much negotiating with Void the gods created a domain for the dead using Life, Death, Mind, and Voids powers. This place presented itself as floating islands surrounded by a force-field that would flow through the void to a place they created using Doom, Life, Time, and Cosmos’ powers, this place was known as Universe Falls. However the only way for these death bubbles to flow over Universe Falls was for the soul or souls inside to find peace and be ready to move on. Once over Universe Falls the soul would be broken down and parts would be reincarnated but lots of it became the energy flowing through the universe, void, and furthest ring to keep balance.
However, now that there was death, the creations grew dismal. To counteract this Vridi and Cosmos created a god from the bright energy of the universe that when it gathered together glowed white and gold, they called him Hope. He turned the tide of the battle between Furthest and Void and the other gods by giving Void the little push she needed to at the very least be willing to communicate with them, she wouldn’t ever betray Furthest or obey Cosmos but when it suited her she would assist them in making something new.
Create they did. In time there would be many new minor gods born from power combinations. Hope and Time would create Light, Time and Void would create Light’s sister Darkness, the three creators would make a beautiful little planet full of life and would come to name it Earterania, and when the universe became too expansive for the major gods to handle every little schism, invasion, and war so they created first guardians one for every type of power on every planet. First guardians were not gods and were capable of death by trauma but would be reborn in a different body, but ascension was only possible by means of non-organic cause of death and every first guardian was fated to die before they were very old.
Eons later the three creators made five races meant to be the strongest. The first race was a violent by nature with great power and long life spans, these were the Psionics. The second race was equipped with wings and incredible durability, they were the Vernians. The third race was born with body parts of beasts and all the abilities that came with them, they were the Anima. The fourth race was born with powers that with most reacted to the environment around them or they were toxic or made entirely out of metal, they were the Elementals. The fifth race was the most powerful, they were diverse and persistent and most prone to resistance, they were the Earteranians and were by far the favorite of Cosmos. All the gods had their favorites, even Void and Furthest.
Each planet was designed to create a quest to create new gods when the universe collapsed, time and time again each planet was tested and time and time again the heroes failed because of one reason or another. When the Psionics came close Death, by order of the three creators, allowed one of the souls of the dead heroes to be pulled from the void to help the new heroes. Except she didn’t, the one they allowed to pass through was there when the Psionics tried to enslave the Earteranians and she joined those who would in time come to want those heroes dead very, very much.
In a doomed timeline others ascended and so by order of Eternity, Time and Void allowed them to pass through to the alpha timeline. Then Earterania rebelled against the three creators and they, out of fear she would join Furthest and corrupt their quest, sealed her away. That caused a great disaster to befall the planet but by order of Cosmos, who was growing rather panicked now, Void allowed them to take shelter in her domain. The ascended heroes joined the heroes from the alpha timeline and they visited many places passing through the void. Because Time had no role in the void the doubles of the heroes were allowed to remain alive. When the heroes from the alpha timeline needed to ascend they had to do it differently because the temples on their planet had been destroyed along with everything else, so instead they went looking for their gods. Cosmos did not get to meet the Mage of Space because the alpha timeline Eliza Reiys had been dead for years but she would get to meet the other copy in time.
Eons would pass and Earterania would heal, for it wasn’t just Cosmos sealing her away that caused damage. One of those living in the void attempted to create new Earteranians using the dna of those on the island, but she could never make it exact and fired off the failures at what she believed to be a broken shell of their home. She didn’t expect them to live. New powered people would be born but not everyone was like that, these were called humans and those with powers were called aspecters. When the aspecters caught the attention of the Earteranians, it was agreed they would remove them from earth and take them to a place in the void that the ascended heroes had created, they called this place The Bubble. The diviner from the first set of heroes’ quest decided to stay behind along with the doubles from the other timeline. When twelve heroes arose, descendants of those on the island, a quest was created. But those on the island manipulated this quest so that those heroes would win.
There were of course many timelines where they didn’t win, and many, many timelines where they didn’t exist at all because they didn’t need to. Most were thrown off course by some tiny little thing; something someone did or didn’t say, a single shot that was or wasn’t fired, or even something as simple as someone standing ever so slightly to the right or left.
What the gods never realized was that they had always existed in one form or another. Because as omniscient and omnipotent as they were they still had no memory of their past lives for it was them in their final moments who created the quest as their universe died. Eliza Reiys allowing all that ever was and will be to pass through her in one instance to make something new, Kiraleen Kakaina providing the hope and creativity for something new to come about, Gwendolyn and Veronica Morrow providing a blank canvas for the new universe, Kerry Ailane giving potential for progression of time and motion of the universe, Alura Faben providing potential for life to come about if that is what the new universe wanted, Mila and Milo Violetta giving potential for emotion and feeling for the new life, Nitrine Mei providing wisdom and fairness, and Damara Karakino gave duty and loyalty. The others were just as important, Glaycia Snow and Duplica Sharp released all their power in a flash of light to create the Green Sun, Kuviria Kakaina would be reborn as Light, her sister would be the blind warrior Sara Scarlentine, Epsilon would once again play the role as a shadow to someone just like her, she would be Eternity, Peridot Marquise and Syrena would become The Demoness and maybe it’s for the best they couldn’t remember, Aqua Filtch would become Death, Phoenix Quidol would be among one of the few of Cosmos’s guardians, she called them angels, who were sentient and human like and were for the most part meant to patrol the barrier Cosmos and Void had set up between the world of their creations, the world of the light gods, and the void which coincidentally was where Death stood guard of the death bubbles, the two of them were proof that feelings could transcend lives. The Empress that almost killed the heroes became the living incarnation of the planet of the Psionics known as Xetis, Levi Solaris would become the living incarnation of the planet of the Anima known as Vesta, Kristal Castrine and Justine Arkos would become the incarnation of Vern, and Elina Niki would be reincarnated as Earterania.
For all that was, is, and would every be was created for them and retroactively by them. An entire existence formed around destruction, reconstruction, and repetition.
