Creating pretty moments at home brings me happiness. If you’ve been following along in my stories you know that my house has been turned inside out and upside down by a studio renovation, yay new ceiling! So making little vignettes of perfection brings me a little sense of control and calm. These amazingly scented white daffodils are the perfect spring addition to our tall bud vase. A different style of bud vase has just been added to the shop! We took our used @hollyjollyjams jam jars and upcycled them into vases. Foraging Food This is Henbit, an edible plant that is also an important early season source of nectar and pollen for honeybees. Henbit is plentiful in our area and grows easily with a passion. “Henbit can be consumed fresh or cooked as an edible herb, and it can be used in teas. The stem, flowers, and leaves are edible, and although this is in the mint family, many people say it tastes slightly like raw kale, not like mint. It is very nutritious, high in iron, vitamins and fibre. You can add it raw to salads, soups, wraps, or green smoothies. Flora and fungi of our little rainforest in the East. My best attempt at Identification in order: 1. Maybe a lobster mushroom or, at best, a munched on Chantrelle - though I for some reason doubt that. 2. Heartleaf skullcap (scutellaria ovata) 3. Hayscented fern (dennstaedtia punctiloba) 4. Common self heal (prunella vulgaris) 5. Likely lactarius species of mushroom 6. I don’t know, I see this all over the place though! 7. Naked-flowered tick trefoil (hylodesmum nudiflorum) 8. This mushroom is hard to identify since it’s so old, but if anyone knows let me know! 9. Moss with a few native sedums and... I’m not great at plant identification via leaf yet. :( 10. Harvesting fireweed and clover blossoms to make fireweed/clover jelly. The “tea” (the strained liquid from blossoms steeped in water to be made into jelly) from the blossoms was such a beautiful magenta and purple color. I also collected the fireweed leaves to make tea (like a cup of tea to drink). After the leaves wilt, they are then rolled, this causes them to be “bruised” so their liquid is released. They leaves are then put into an airtight container and left to ferment about 5 days. After fermenting, they lease lose their leafy smell. They are then dried. After drying, they are ready to drink and taste like black tea but without the caffeine and totally organic.
