WRITING AND RESEARCH
Hello, my name is Eileen Codd and I am currently in the progress of getting my A.A here at SCF.
I was assigned "Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations’ Millennium General Assembly" by James Hampton.
1. The piece is currently stored at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
2. The artwork was created from 1950-1964.
3. James Hampton was inspired by several religious interpretations of the return of Christ. The throne was created to symbolize the third heaven often referred to as the "heaven of heavens" or the best part of heaven.
4. The entire piece is made from recycled materials such as old furniture, cardboard cutouts, and light bulbs.
5. James Hampton was a janitor at the time of creating the piece, as a janitor, he often picked up materials from dumpsters or trash.
My perception of art changed after researching the piece. I assumed the artwork was thousands of years old and that it was for royalty. Reading that the artist used recycled materials in 1950 added a new level of understanding for me. I also was more impressed with the artwork after finding out.
