So, #geology & #foram tumblr, hoping you guys have an answer to this: so, the company that made the slides we use for picking isn't making them any more, & while I found a couple sites to give them to check out, thought I'd come here to ask where do any of you get yours - we use the set up I circled in the pic, the metal bottom, the 4 circle cardboard and a glass top. Really big cells This slab of rock is 3.9 centimeters across. Every single critter you see preserved is…remarkably, a single cell. These are a unique type of foraminifera called fusulinids. Foraminifera are single-celled, ocean-dwelling organisms that make hard shells out of calcium carbonate. Fusulinids developed as a normal-sized type of foram during the Mississippian, around 320 million years ago, but they rapidly expanded. By the time this rock formed in the Pennsylvanian, fusulinids had grown to the point where a single cell could be over a centimeter long. Eventually they reached a point where a single cell could be over 5 centimeters long. This unit, Kansas’s Lola formation, is one of several units in the United States filled with these spectacular fossils. A Star Studded Beach

Foraminifera (“forams” to those more intimately acquainted with them) are amoeba-like protists living within a “test” (shell) they either secrete or construct for local materials. This microscopic group have both planktonic and benthic representatives. Geoscientist find both types of forams useful for a variety of purposes; the reconstruction of past environments and climates and the determination of relative ages of different rock layers.

When foraminifera die, the tests remain and can form a significant portion of the seafloor’s sediments. High populations, wind and current sorting all contribute to areas where large concentrations of tests accumulate. The ‘star’ sand of a beach in Okinawa, Japan were produced by populations of the foraminifera, Baculogypsina sphaerulata. Likewise the famous pink sand beach of Bermuda gets its color from the red and pink tests of the foram Homotrema rubrum.
