VOLUME AND TERROR WITH A FOG MACHINE
Wax is dripping down your arm as you saunter despite the candle in your hand, approaching the “x” marked on your friends' map as they vicariously lead you for their amusement. The path has been stomped and abused but is also strewn with shrunken heads, shovels and chandeliers made out of bones. You keep repeating to yourself “this is a just a joke” until a wild lyric appears and says, “Hey! I’m the ghoul next door, I eat sanctified gore, not the carrion trash from the grave”. A stapled limb on the zombie scare crow on the lawn declares: “Forbidden Dimension” and you walk past into the asylum. Phibes, the main lyricist and frontrunner since 1988, recalls his inspiration with the unmatched accuracy of a traumatized child. In the days long before coddled, sheltered kids Klondike Days’ skin was woven with the petrifying relics of children’s nightmares. While Phibes trolled through the torture chambers, ghost trains and girls sawed in half at the carnival, his mind was being warped into the sick delight we experience today. The juxtaposition of humor and terror is ageless, and Forbidden Dimension has nailed it. Phibes describes their stage face-paint as having a “little kids in ghoul make-up posing for famous monsters sort of feel”, but also jokes he’s getting old enough to look creepy enough without it. There is no blip in their legacy where true followers would feign ignorance, Forbidden Dimension has consistently performed in small venues, with small recording labels, and has never strayed from their distinct style. The Bailey, still scattered with playing cards, toast and toilet paper from their viewing of “Rocky Horror Picture Show” was just the right chaotic props to welcome these guys to town. Despite Forbidden Dimension’s virtuoso regularly amounting to copious cult fame, these guys are undeniably approachable. During the show the crowd was nestled right into the stage, and with drinks resting on its’ edge one could easily imagine Forbidden Dimension had just jumped up onto a table and began effortlessly banging out tunes. While Warhead candies were being strewn by the bagged head drummer, giddy shrieks and the sound created from excited jumping shoes mingled well with their evolved sound that grew from the fossilized remains of a reel to reel fuzzbox stereo hooked up to a drum machine. Jackson is the demon responsible for their album art, merchandise and the occasional comic-strip insert. His illustrations possess a combined flair of macabre and cartoon fun and oh boy his laughter jumps right off the page. Unable to contain his delight Jackson offered free pins with winged titties on them, grinning giddily while passing them out suggesting different colour combinations. He religiously updates his art online at flicker.com/tombola. He responds to comments on his pages regularly. This is a band that isn’t trapped in some publicist’s crystal ball. They freely converse with their fans, if you want to find them all you have to do is dig. Once your desire for Forbidden Dimension is ignited you will long to leap down the worm hole and get lost in their psycho labyrinth journey. To find them you must long to. This is how they weed out the posers. You must search dark clubs, space stations and hearses and even be led to the very depths of the internet, where you will find fan made sites, an aged Myspace page and even HP Lovesauce’s tent dance on Youtube. They even have some of their songs on reverbnation.com/forbiddendimension. Forbidden Dimension exploits the essence of humor when laughing about, “trains made of broken hearts with the tracks made out of bones”, but who could cast condescension upon comic relief- the people who can shake their shoulders and pound their feet to lyrics like these? The people having the fun have little time for speculation, but Phibes incorporates his critique into a comic. The character is ‘terminally bewildered’ and exasperates, “Open minded my ass, when will fun music be accepted?!” The answer is anyone who has burst out laughing during a horror movie, or allowed a friend to urge a giggle during a time of ardent enmity can attest to the exact feeling of release Forbidden Dimension exemplifies. He recommends the old Horror Movies: “The Brain that wouldn’t Die”, “The Wolfman”, and “Coffin Joe” as good starting points to capture the root of the gnarly eagerness and wretched excitement constantly drooling from Jackson Phibes eyes. These guys put on a rocking show- it tickled. This tactical frisk absolutely bewitches and is comprised of two parts when successful: an element of surprise, and an unctuous delivery. Forbidden Dimension tickles the mayhem within and beckons it to join in on their powwow of catharsis. Their show ended with a fantastic display of guitar violin. Phibes and HP love sauce slid their strings up and down the other like some sort of epic lightsaber battle. This Canadian band recharged every neuron in the building with their naked sound waves and stayed well after their instruments were put away to speak with their fans. Records were signed, HP wrote “Why don’t you call me back?” and Phibes signed off with, “With love from hell”. Wherever these guys are actually from: an alien space craft, a padded room, or a children’s carnival, you should be sure to follow them home, wherever they are headed is sure to be an absolute riot.

Tom “Jackson Phibes” Bagley
Professionally, Tom Bagley has been involved in the world of monsters for twenty-five years, both as a professional illustrator and, as Jackson Phibes, the front man of the legendary cult horror punk band, Forbidden Dimension.
Back in 1988, Jackson Phibes started up Forbidden Dimension as his prior project, Color Me Psycho, was ending. Taking up the horror mantle, Forbidden Dimension has continued to exist for a quarter of a century, with its most recent release, The Golden Age of Lazers, coming out last year.
If twenty-five years of fronting a horror rock band isn’t enough, Tom Bagley has flourished as an artist whose style is unique and instant recognizable. He has provided artwork for bands like Calabrese, Man…or Astro-Man?, GWAR, Chixdigit!, The Benders, Servotron, and more. In addition to this, Tom continues to illustrate a cavalcade of creatures, showing his love for the horror genre. With a noted taste in films both well-known and obscure, Tom has been a grand ambassador for the horror genre.
Furthermore, Tom has been a good representation of a ‘Monster kid,’ someone who truly loves monsters and horror movies. He has remained humble and really grounded, finding ways he can give back to the horror community. His artwork and music has celebrated a lot of the forgotten stars of horror, sci-fi and all that lies in between. For 2013, Tom Bagley should receive recognition of his work and efforts, even if just to say ‘thank you’ for all the years of dedicated service.
In this, the silver anniversary of Forbidden Dimension and of him professionally giving himself to art, Tom Bagley is worthy for entrant in the Monster Kid Hall of Fame. The community-aspect of the Rondos, how winners are those voted in, is why the awards matter. It’s not a case of a small group deciding which is better, based on subjective taste. Instead, it’s a way for those who enjoy a piece of work to have it receive the kudos thought to be forthcoming. This goes double for the Hall of Fame, since there is no nomination short-list. Simply, it’s a case for those fans of monsters and horror to organize and promote someone they think has earned a moment, a single moment, of gratitude.
For your consideration, in the category of the 2013 Monster Kid Hall of Fame, please vote for Tom “Jackson Phibles” Bagley.
For further information about Jackson Phibes/Tom Bagley, listen to Episode 40 of 6′+ (“Into The October Country”) where Dr. Gangrene interviews him before the 2012 Horror Hootenanny, featuring Forbidden Dimension’s first stateside appearance in years.
