Treachery. In his line of work, he should have expected it, should have known better. He was plenty wary on any given day but, being so far from home, perhaps he ought to have been even more so. Ah well. Hindsight was of little use to him here and now, trapped as he was. May as well make the best of it and look on the bright side of things.
The bright side being: he wasn't alone.
The less than bright side being: he wasn't alone and his company looked like a tough customer - looked, in fact, as though he might be part of a crowd similar to that from which Matthew himself hailed. That, however, was an assumption... and he had already been reminded once today that assumptions were dangerous.
"'Ey," he offered casually by way of greeting, trying to get a feel for the guy. He put on a wry grin. "Pleasant day, isn't it?"
Not that anyone could tell - no windows in this crummy cell. Some people simply had no standards these days.
