Ginseng.... none of this was harvested for sale, I was just digging it out for transplanting since it was getting too thick in the main patch and was starting to choke itself out. I found a couple in there that were like 8-10 years old so im hoping they do well with the transplant! There weren't many berries at all this year for some reason (i think the squirrels got to them early) so I'm hoping itll do better next year

Join Us at the Forest Farming Conference in Southern Ohio in Late September

9/11/2025 – In just a few weeks, there is going to be a wonderful, small forest farming conference at the beautiful United Plant Savers Bot

Participants will explore forest farming topics including growing, conserving, harvesting, and marketing a wide range of species such as mushrooms, goldenseal, and elderberry. The event will also focus on small business development, marketing, value-added strategies, and looking at agritourism as a way to diversify income and engage the public with forest-based enterprises. ...

The agenda and speaker bios are on the Appalachian Forest Farmer Coalition site here and registration is on Eventbrite. Registration is $100 and includes the keynote presentation, 5 classroom sessions, 4 field sessions, a panel with seasoned forest farmers and agritourism professionals, 2 workshops, 1 farm tour, and 5 meals. Attendees have multiple lodging options within a 15mi radius or camp at the United Plant Savers Botanical Sanctuary for $10 (paid upon entry via cash, check or card). And there are scholarships available. Apply for those on this Google form.

The event is September 26--28. The scholarships are $350 each which would pay for registration and cover a bit of the cost of attending. I can't attend but maybe someone who sees this can, so!

Urban Farming? ... Yes! Opportunities abound in this world, Hantz Farms is just a another example of people thinking and acting. Our dwellings, our neighborhoods, they are our creations! Harmonious or decrepit, generic or innovative, spaces that consume or spaces that enhance, our choice alone. What these people are doing shows us another way. Farms and cities, urban life and rural life need not be so drastically distinct. The closer we are to our food, to our natural resources the more we account for them, value them; the more we can experience them. What prevents a community from banning together to do this in Detroit? They do it, they own it, they take pride in it, they clean their city up, they benefit when it matures. In the mean time, they have a park.  The opportunities abound.
