Jewish dervishes Agha-Jaan Darvish and his brother, patriarchs of the Darvish family. Tehran, Iran, c.1922.
“Because of its specific association with Sufism and its ensuing identification with Islam, dervishhood is an order comprised almost exclusively of Muslim practicioners. The two Jewish dervishes pictured here in this rare photograph are among the very few who had successfully been integrated into the order without converting to Islam. Like the Jewish practitioners of a traditional Iranian sport in the houses of strength (zurkhaneh) — a sport that is profoundly intertwined with Islamic ritual — these dervishes represent a uniquely Iranian hybrid of Judaism and Islam.
Each of the Jewish dervishes seen here is displaying emblematic accoutrements of dervishhood: 1) The cloak, an outward sign of his state. 2) A kashkul (begging bowl) often made of such materials as mother-of-pearl. 3) A gourd, a coconut shell, or carved wood suspended from the wrist by a chain. 4) A tabarzin (short axe or hatchet) carried in the right hand and intended to fend off wild animals or highway robbers. 5) A chanta (patched bag) slung over the shoulder to carry essential items. 6) Takht-e pust (skin bed), a small mat made of animal skin that served as his bed while traveling. 7) A long rosary.”

It's kind of like if you were in unrequited love with the crossword puzzle
Last year, I befriended a Catholic seminarian. We've gotten to be pretty decent friends. Seeing as he was staying in town for the summer and I wasn't, I entrusted him with caring for my plant.
He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"
"What?"
He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"
"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."
Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.
Listen, totally cool. My plant becoming Catholic is a great deal for her not dying over the summer. But now I must navigate this interfaith household. Keep me in your thoughts.
#i love prayer plants but they're fussy so I don't keep them#can we have a picture op they're so pretty
Behold, Dorothea
(Naming my plant "Gift of God," and then giving her to a seminarian with just the explanation that it's a prayer plant? Okay, that's my bad.)
I should also add- I ran into my rabbi and explained the situation. I then asked, earnestly, if there was a remedy. A mikveh of sorts, or a beit din, or something.
He turned to me, sighed, and said in a very deadpan tone-- "Plants don't have covenants, Joy,"
So Theodora's a free agent according to rabbinic opinion. I guess I'll permit her to be Roman Catholic.
Okay, that reaction makes me think that 'Rabbi, my houseplant may have accidentally converted to Catholicism, can I fix it?' is not the weirdest thing he's ever been asked, and reader, I am intrigued by what the actual weirdest thing was.
I am DYING here, help. Dorothea please pray for me.
“Humans are inherently selfish--" Then why do so many cultures value hospitality, to the point of dictating it in their religions? Why is it so common for hosts to offer their visitors their best food, and as much of it as they can? At some point, multiple cultures decided that they knew what it felt like to be alone and vulnerable, and promised each other to never let those who stay with them feel that way. That doesn't sound very "inherently selfish" to me.
movie yapper scale (HOME movies we're not being public menaces)
0- NO talking during movie NONE. i will kill you
1- a couple comments but keep it short. no pausing
2- frequently points out little stuff ("ooh cool shirt", "are they stupid")
3- i will pause occasionally to have brief discussions about the movie
4- frequently discussing movie stuff. might talk over dialogue occasionally
5- it's just nonstop. can't enjoy the film if im not engaging with it!!
depends on who im watching with / depends on the movie
not a movie watcher
“character who gained weight to show how they are healthy now” trope my beloved
whenever i look into a historical monarch who doesn’t get talked about much and is just kind of a blank spot in my understanding of the historical narrative, 95% of the time what i find is pure white hot blistering capability. a pencil pusher for the ages. a 39 year reign with no more than three hours of sleep a night. there aren’t any good stories from his reign because he systematically caught and stopped all catastrophic good stories before they could start. you shrimply must respect it
I literally said, "Are you kidding me?" IN THE GASPED ADMIRING WAY.
charcoal is so fun because you can just do this shit lmao
the thing about getting the world changed for the better is you gotta learn how to make your ideas sound appealing and positive to people who might not agree otherwise.
But on the internet people describe their ideas in the most shocking and extreme way possible as a way of sifting out people who are "really" on their side
That is bad for forming a movement or sparking any kind of action
it's gotten so outrageous that people will have an idea like "we should have a strong public transportation system that is accessible to everyone" but they will express it like "FUCK CARS! WE SHOULD BAN CARS! IF YOU LIKE TO DRIVE YOU'RE A FASCIST! NO ONE NEEDS A CAR!"
This causes everyone to get into arguments about whether it is true that no one needs a car, and whether banning cars would make places inaccessible for people with certain disabilities.
The whole time we don't need to "ban cars" to have public transportation and it makes no sense why we are talking about it
We're never going to get accessible public transportation like this.
Its a real shame that sinful has essentially come to mean 'full culpable and worthy of punishment' bc i think it also severely diminishes our ability to make a theological account of how sin recruits people to be complicit in their own destruction. if its sinful to hurt others, then its sinful to hurt yourself, because you matter just as much as anyone else. but you cant even really bring the sin language into that general vicinity bc of the constant stigmatising use of sinful to mean 'you need to be punished for doing this' rather than 'we are suffering from distortions and corruption and can act in ways that worsen this'.
Like to charge and reblog to cast Chinese scientists destroying the Insulin industry
Here’s a link with more details! They got an insulin dependent patient medication free in just 11 weeks using a cell transplant! It’s still very early and needs a lot more testing to see if they can replicate the results, but having success in a human is very promising!
It's wild blueberry season in Sweden and I've been picking and eating my fill everyday from the forest behind my house! The entire forest floor is covered in wild blueberry bushes and the tangy taste is so cosmic, I had to paint them✨ Photos of the berries I picked!
