Just a little bit of angst.
“Fairy Dreams”
1887. The Beating Heart On The Silver Platter
This is “The Beating Heart On The Silver Platter.” Another window is closed today.
They led me into the forest where they sat me on a stump and told me to eat a heart that had been prepared for me on a silver platter.
The heart pumped in and out as if it were still beating. Even I had to admit it looked very aesthetically pleasing on the silver platter. It was the platonic ideal of what one would think about when thinking of “beating heart on silver platter.”
I wanted to ask questions but for one reason or another I did not. Later on, when I had the time to reflect on the whole affair, I thought of the questions I would’ve asked had I the action to: Why have you led me here? Who are you? Why are you asking me to eat this beating heart on a silver platter?
The forest chattered with cicadas on the leaves, and threads of sunlight unspooled from the canopies of dense branches above. I thought, If not for this very strange circumstance I would be enjoying the pleasant and quiet mysticism of the forest.
I wouldn’t call giving in to their demands and eating the beating heart a submission, but it was a cautioning on my part. I think it comes from childhood, when I thought the worst part of being loved was when I was still loved despite my disobedience. So I cautioned always on the side of obedience.
Now that I’m dead, I ponder in perpetual and unwavering darkness if this was always the best path to lead a life down...
