28: “You’re still mad?”

When Zuko comes out of the shower, Sokka remains at his desk, stewing silently. Zuko pulls off his towel, and Sokka says nothing, and then nothing again, when Zuko resigns himself to pulling on his robe. He walks over to the desk and stands opposite Sokka, but Sokka keeps his head turned down toward his scrolls. Zuko picks up a metal orb on the desk—a gift from Toph—and tests its weight in his hand. Sokka only turns to another page. Zuko places the orb carefully back on the surface on the desk, stilling it with his hand. And then he rolls it, so it skims over the corner and drops to the ground with a loud bang. 

Sokka looks up at him with a fierce glare. 

Zuko crosses his arms. “You’re still mad?”

“Oh, is that what you’re doing right now? You know, Zuko, you could stand to use your words.”

“You’re not answering the question,” Zuko says.

Sokka continues glaring up at him, then takes in Zuko’s crossed arms and the sullen look on his face. Sokka sighs, and leans back in his chair, crossing his arms, too. 

“I’m not mad,” he says quietly, looking off to the side, away from Zuko. “I was scared.”

Zuko uncrosses his arms. “Oh.”

“It’s just—” Sokka stops himself and swallows, finally facing Zuko again. “Every time you go running off without a plan, I have no idea what’s going to happen to you. And I know you think people need you, and you’re doing the right thing, but it’s just…” He leans forward, his elbows landing on the desk, his hand coming up to pinch the bridge between his eyes. “I hate it. It scares me.” 

He looks up, and his eyes meet Zuko’s. “I need you, too.”

Zuko walks around the desk and drops to his knees. He takes Sokka’s hand in his. “I’m sorry,” he says, also quietly. 

Sokka leans forward, and Zuko’s head tilts up so their foreheads meet. His other hand reaches out to brush the bruise blooming on Zuko’s cheek. “It’s okay,” he replies simply. 

“No, it’s not,” Zuko says, hissing at the touch.

Sokka sighs. “No, it’s not,” he agrees. And his face tilts a little further to meet Zuko in a kiss.

its ok, everybody needs to be freed eventually, it’s not your fault for wanting to see and experience new things

i rly just want to be able to figure things out on my own but i feel bad for even thinking that tbh :/ cuz my parents would disapprove but they say that with like everything (my parents force me to depend on them but then get mad when I’m not independent enough like??)
