Shippensburg University will host a lecture with Amelia Gapin, a software engineer and the first trans woman to grace the cover of Women’s Running magazine, on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. in Ceddia Union Building, MPR A. Gapin’s lecture, “I Am Entirely Me,” focuses on her very public transition and will educate the campus community on the complexities of her trans identity, one that cannot be fully comprehended without considering the significant impact of sexual orientation and gender identity as well as the societal constructs established within gender binaries. This presentation will serve as a springboard for a larger conversation on campus in which students, faculty, and staff explore and discuss the unique intersections of LGBTQ+ individuals. The free and public event is sponsored by the Office of Social Equity, Commission on Human Understanding, LGBTQ+ Concerns Committee, Career and Community Engagement Center, Counseling and College Student Personnel Department, Social Work and Gerontology Department, Dining Services, Women’s Center and Athletics Department. Yeah, that’s @totallyamelia, @bitly backoffice engineer and former @tumblr software engineer, speaking just two days after completing yet another #ChicagoMarathon (I think her third since transitioning), with @foodasaurusrex-blog @foodasaurus-rex-blog cheering her on as usual. Shippensburg U. (which is honouring alumnus Bill Wolfe, who was killed in the Mandalay Bay Hotel massacre), located near Harrisburg, is one of those state-run schools in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania that was upgraded from a state college (as in Cheyney State, Indiana State, Slippery Rock State) back in the 1980s.
