Blue Bloods basically very, very, very borderline told us that Danny has ADD or AD/HD. Confused?
Frank says Danny was a hyperactive kid, rebellious teenager, and jump-before-you-look kinda detective. Frank even says Danny steps “on the line” (the line between what’s right or wrong, black and white, whatever wording you want to use). And the impulsive stuff Danny does... those plans that would be great if thought out a little more... it’s just...
Look, guys. I have an AD/HD friend (a very good friend of mine), and he has no problem telling me how he struggled with his “problem”. But here’s the thing, I’ve known a few AD/HD people, and all of them were FILLED with emotions. And it seems like the Reagans are torn between being stoics and wear-your-heart-on-your-sleeve kind of people. And I get that: you have to be a little stoic to be a cop or to be in any high stress job, but you can’t only be a stoic, or only be.... the opposite of a stoic.
And I’m here to tell you Danny is both. There is no question that the detective shows emotions.... but it’s really only anger and love/happiness. Follow: in his job, we mainly see frustration and anger and even sadness, but do we really see him happy? He says he loves doing it and it defines who he is (Linda even backs this up), but I don’t remember seeing him like... happy? Yes, he has some fun banter with Jackie and Baez, but he’s friends with them, so he’s a little more opened with them.
The affection and love he has for his family.... yes, he and Erin fight like it’s the apocalypse sometimes, but they still lovingly tease each other (With Erin Calling Danny old, and Danny exploiting someone of Erin’s teen dramas). And Danny’s only really open with Linda. I mean, really opened. Before the terrible injustice BB gave Linda, did Danny cry in front of anybody else? No. One of Danny’s best scenes was in the Silver Star episode (and really any episode that dove into his military career just a tiny bit more), where he thinks he’s not good enough. That some kid had to die to give Danny a family. I just really want to wrap my head around this, and dive deeper into that insecurity. And then write a chapter or... five... for some good old fashion fan fiction.
I don’t know how this started with an explanation for my thinking that Danny’s AD/HD or some form of that to a whole character analysis, yet here we are. The whole point was I wanted to see more AD/HD tendencies for Danny to showcase. Like he’s ranting because he’s enraged over someone or other, and completely randomly, wonders if he.. took his pills or watered the plants or checked the mail. That was the point.
But ugh. Blue Bloods had a ton of character developments and just Let them hanging there. Like, as I’ve been discussing, Danny’s AD/HD- ish tendencies and his insecurities and his Military background; the fact that Jamie seemed most affected by Joe’s death- were they best buddies? Did Joe do some heroic act to save Jamie? I want answers! OR the whole story line with Linda’s PTSD. They had so much potential with that one. That doesn’t get solved in three episodes. They needed to Carry it through to the rest of her run. That would’ve added so, so, so much to her character, to Danny’s, to Jack and Sean’s... it would’ve added to everyone’s, okay?
And again, I’m off-topic. I’m going to stop here before this becomes insanely long, but reblog if you agree with any point I have made!
