Fort-Dauphin est bien sûr le plus beau site historique de Fort-Liberté. Construite en 1735 avec des pierres de tailles apportées de France sous les ordres du Roi de France Louis XV, la forteresse s'élève sur un petit promontoire rocheux qui lui permet de voir la ville et protéger la baie. Les batteries de canons furent construites entre 1741 et 1743 et Fort-Dauphin disposait alors de 55 canons qui furent également apportés de France. Ses vestiges vous permettront d'apprécier la conception de ce fort aussi efficace qu'utile avec son architecture en harmonie avec le paysage. One of my favorite things while traveling in Madagascar was to find the animals that were harder to find. Camouflage fascinates me in all it’s forms, and while I was supposed to be looking at lemurs, I somehow easily stumbled upon this cutie! 🕷The Madagascar Net-Casting Spider (Deinopis madagascariensis) is an interesting fella, and today’s #MadagascarMonday friend! Also known as ogre-faced spiders for their two eyes at the front of their head, these spiders have amazing eye-sight for their type of foraging. They are hunters, and will spin a rectangular web net for hovering over and catching their prey. All members of the genus Deinopis show excellent camouflage, and all members kind of look like sticks! They’re so cool! They also all hold their legs in pairs! One of my favorite finds. Here we have something special for all the gemmologists, geologists and mineralogists out there. I was lucky enough to be able to pick up this specimen of grandidierite (considered one of the world's rarest gemstones) actually showing the host matrix and associated minerals which makes the piece even more rare than normal!
