Forter Castle, built in 1560, was an outlying stronghold of the great Angus family of Ogilvie of Airlie, and would have been built both as a refuge from trouble in their Strathmore territories, as well as a defense against Highland catarans. The castle was destroyed by the Duke of Argyll in 1640.  Forter Castle had to wait a full 350 years until its restoration. Today it has been has been completely restored and is used as a vacation rental. It is located in Kirkton of Glenisla, a village in Glen Isla, Angus, Scotland.

Forter Castle, Angus

A 16th century tower house of NW Angus, Forter Castle lies in Glen Isla 12 miles (19 km) north northwest of Alyth. The castle comprises four storeys and a garret and was built on the L-plan. It was a former stronghold of the Ogilvies that was stormed along with Airlie Castle by the Campbells of Inverewe in 1640 on the instructions of Archibald Campbell, the 8th Earl of Argyll (1598 - 1661). Briefly the property of the MacThomas family, the castle eventually fell into a ruinous state. However, it was restored around 1990 and remains occupied today as a private residence but is also let out on a self catering basis prices start at a cool £4,250 for one week!!
