I'm praying for the people of Ukraine while I sit here safe thinking about this night, February 24, 1942, here in Los Angeles within spitting distance of the yard I sit in each night the lights blacked out as air raid sirens sounded. The black night sky was pierced by needles of light from search lights around Los Angeles as reports of enemy aircraft overhead came in. Reports of blinking lights at sea, flares in the sky, and enemy planes overhead a day after a Japanese sub fired on an oil refinery in Santa Barbara led to multiple alerts throughout the night. Soon a cacophony of machine gun and anti-aircraft fire began to rage from emplacements around the city. The 37th Coast Artillery Brigade at Fort MacArthur began firing at 3 am and kept up a steady fire until 4 am. In all more than 1,400 rounds were fired without downing any enemy planes. Falling shells did find targets that night though hitting several buildings and vehicles, injuring several and killing five, three in car accidents and two from heart attacks. .... But exultation turned to embarrassment the next day when the Secretary of the Navy said there had been no air raid. No enemy planes.
