Double Union Clothing Swap

Members and prospective members are invited to join us for a fabulous evening of fashion and sustainability at our Used Clothes Swap on Wednesday, June 26th at 7 PM. Bring your gently worn clothing items that you no longer wear or need, and exchange them for some stylish new-to-you pieces. It's a fantastic opportunity to refresh your wardrobe without spending a dime and to give your pre-loved clothes a new lease on life. Whether you're looking for casual wear, professional attire, or unique accessories, there's something for everyone at our swap. Plus, it's a chance to connect with fellow fashion enthusiasts, share style tips, and promote eco-friendly practices. Let's swap, shop, and support sustainable fashion together.

Please bring the clothes back with you that no one picks up at the swap. Double Union is not responsible for leftover clothes.

Learn How to Darn, Saturday April 27

This “Learn How to Darn” workshop will happen from 3pm – 4:30 on Saturday April 27, 2019.

Darning is a simple technique for patching holes in socks, sweaters, and other knitwear. It is a great way to extend the use of favorite knitwear! We will also have an electric sweater shaver available for anyone who wants to shave some pills off of their sweaters.

The workshop will include the following:

How to darn

How to improvise if there is not a real darning egg/mushroom available

How to shave pills off of a sweater

Please bring any or all of the following:

Socks, sweaters, or other knitwear with holes

Darning egg or darning mushroom (bringing this is optional)

We’ll have on-site:

Needles and other sewing notions

Yarn and thread

An electric sweater shaver

This event is open to members and people who are interested in applying for membership. No need to RSVP, just come by at any time during the event (i.e. it is okay to arrive later than 3pm, this will be a relaxed workshop). We hope to see you there!

Sewing + repair project time, February 4, 11 am - 2 pm

Sewing machines and hand-sewing tools are pretty interesting and great tools. Let’s work on sewing and repair projects together!

This will be on Saturday February 4, 11 am - 2 pm, open to members (and their guests) and people interested in becoming members. (How to visit the space: https://doubleunion.org/visit )

You’re invited to bring your own projects or invent one. It could involve textiles/fabric or it could involve something else! If you don’t know how to use a sewing machine, somebody else can help you get started. Feel free to bring some lunch too.

Your host (not an expert in sewing machines but up for experiments) is planning to work on some or all of the following: replacing worn-out squares in a quilt, repairing a shredded backpack strap, and making fabric covers for things to prevent them from getting scratched in a bag.

We'll have a couple of sewing machines, some scrap fabric, and lots of small sewing tools (think needles, thread, buttons, stitch pickers, etc). We also have a dress form at the space. Feel free to bring an extra machine if you want!

Trans Passport Photobooth 

Where: AntiLab @ Gallery 2301, 2301 Telegraph Street, Oakland (There's also a 2301 Telegraph St., Berkeley, so double check you're headed to the location in Oakland.)

When: Saturday, May 6, 2017 from 11 am - 3 pm

Double Union, a group of female-identified hackers and makers, is partnering with creative resistance pop-up AntiLab to provide resources for our trans and genderqueer communities. 

We will be taking passport photos and professional-use photos (think for LinkedIn or job bios) for free and in a safe environment. We'll also have info packets on hand for how to approach legal name and gender changes in California. To ensure that the space is comfortable, we'll have a Code of Conduct on hand and will be enforcing it. Alongside the photos you receive will be a signed statement from our photographers stating that the person being photographed retains all legal rights to their images. As part of cleanup for the event, we will be deleting our copies of the photographs. The space has a gender neutral bathroom, and we'll have some mirrors on hand for folks who'd like to get picture perfect at the event.

July Updates

First, apologies to anyone who showed up to the Pride Open House on June 29th, and had to deal with the door issues and location change. Huge thank you to Sequoia Fabrica for backup hosting. Our lock system had lost power, and the backup physical keys were unfortunately not with people who could get over to the space. A couple members have been working on making sure the door system is more reliable, including stabilizing the cords, so hopefully we won’t lose power to the controller again.
