Fosi

The Fosi were a Germanic tribe from around modern day middle Germany. Almost nothing is known about these people except from what Tacitus wrote about them.

The Fosi were neighbours with the Cherusci tribe, they were less prosperous than the Cherusci. There are historians who suggest that the people of the Fosi tribe were later known as the Saxons. This suggestion comes from the fact that Tacitus has not described the Saxons and the Fosi are from the same area.

This theory however has not been proven at all so we can't say that the Fosi are the original Saxons. It is more likely that several tribes together laid the foundation for the Saxons. This is the description written by Tacitus in which the Fosi are mentioned:

"Dwelling on one side of the Chauci and Chatti, the Cherusci long cherished, unassailed, an excessive and enervating love of peace. This was more pleasant than safe, for to be peaceful is self-deception among lawless and powerful neighbours. Where the strong hand decides, moderation and justice are terms applied only to the more powerful and so the Cherusci, ever reputed good and just, are now called cowards and fools, while in the case of the victorious Chatti success has been identified with prudence.

The downfall of the Cherusci brought with it also that of the Fosi, a neighbouring tribe, which shared equally in their disasters, though they had been inferior to them in prosperous days."

Interestingly, Tacitus mentions that the Fosi's downfall coincided with the Cherusci. What these disasters might be is unknown. Maybe it was war between them and the Romans or their ongoing warfare against the Chatti caused their demise. It is possible that both tribes played a role in the formation of the Saxons.

This map does not accurately display the placement of several tribes, mainly the ones in the Netherlands, but it is one of the very few maps that does portray the general location of the Fosi.
