Not quite Fossil.

Ever since I started working and earning my own money, I’d wanted to have one of those vintage leather Fossil totes as a triumphant reminder that I now earn my own moolah and I deserve good things. Then again, Fossil totes aren’t the cheapest of bags and over the course of a decade, since I started my first job, I was often too intimidated by the price to actually buy one. I would often be too impatient to save up as well, and would later settle for a cheaper polyurethane lookalike.

Years and multiple polyurethane Fossil-lookalike bags later, I still long to own a nice bag by Fossil. But regardless of how much my income has grown, I’m still the same level of cheap – especially towards myself. Often, I would go to an online shop, pick a Fossil tote I liked and contemplate about which payment method to use for half an hour, only to eventually close the window and settle for something cheaper.

After years of doing this on repeat, I finally realized the problem: polyurethane bags don’t last long; I’ve had to throw them out every two years or so when the material started crumbling. Then, the most annoying thing is, I never did lose my desire for an actual Fossil bag.

In a Spirit-led moment of epiphany, I got to understand that this is the same thing with going after one’s dreams, asking the girl of your dreams out, etc. I think that a lot of people get intimidated by the things they really want that they settle for a counterfeit version – only to keep yearning for the real thing. It’s no wonder some people don’t ever get over their ‘ones who got away’. It’s the same concept.

So, I reminded myself that, while the polyurethane bags may seem economical now, in the long run they’re going to be real expensive due to constant wear and tear. A good quality bag, however, may cause a dent in my wallet today but would still be in good condition five years from now. I’ve got to think long term rather than easy and cheap.

It’s the same thing with the dreams and desires that I may have in life – if I can dream them, they’re worth pursuing.

So, tonight after hundreds of 'add to cart’ and 'close window’ scenarios, I finally ordered my first Fossil tote. It will be the first reminder of the good and high quality things that I deserve in life, and that good things won’t come cheap.
